Major General Brooking was the Commander in Chief British Sector Berlin while I was serving there.

    Very sad news.

    RIP.

    Gus,

I read your post about serving in Berlin and having happy memories.

I recently saw the obituary in a Berlin newspaper and was wondering if you served at the same time.

This was the main reason that I posted, as well as being a Berlin resident.

    Hi Tom

    Thanks for thinking about me.

As a ex blue job and on a significantly reduced pay packet compared to the Major General back then, I didn't have much contact with him. Probably waved him smartly through the main gates a few times whilst on guard.

I was 'volunteered' once to escort VIPs at the Maifeld once, including some visiting Russians, for the Queens Birthday Parade in about 1988. Princess Anne was the Royal family representative and I remember him looking very resplendent in all of his regalia. I was somewhat fixated however with the visiting Soviet conscripts. I had never been this close to 'the enemy' before.

    Gus,

If you ever get to visit Berlin, please try and pay a visit to our RBL Berlin Branch premises, situated behind the old NAFFI on Heerstrasse. (Karolingerplatz 2) with old Red British telephone box nearby.

We have a lot of memorabilia on the walls and you may even know one or two who stayed over!

    Regards
    Tom
