LT H.Waring, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders - help!

Discussion in 'Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy' started by Charlie Spencer, Jan 30, 2025.

  1. Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me with anymore information on my Great Grandfather Harold Waring.
I've been tasked at work (I'm serving RN) to produce a piece on family members who served in WW2, however i am taking this opportunity to learn what i can as it interests me, my family and his daughter (my grandmother).
I've been in contact with my Grandmother about his history, and viewed hours worth of information online to gather the following -

    H. Waring (born 1907) was the RSM (Scots Guards) of the Glasgow University Of Officer Training Corps before commissioning into the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders (1942/1943). He served as the Mortar officer with the 2nd battalion Cameron highlanders under command the the 11th Indian infantry brigade for the battles of Monte Cassino, and then fought in San Marino. He then went onto Greece to help stabilise the country following German Occupation. My grandmother also says he had involvement in Sicily.
He returned to Italy after the war where his family joined him for several years, He survived the war and left the QOCH to join the TA as a Major in the the inns of court regiment.

Unfortunately i do not know his service number.
Any further information or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

    Charlie

    Hello Charlie.

Please see the images of the Medal Application Card below. If you can corroborate the address, handwriting, and signature from letters/family items that you already have this will confirm your great grandfather's army number (as an officer) as 240318, and give you something to work on as a start at least.

    Good luck with your search.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

Scots Guards Enlistment Register (Attestation 1928).

Large format pages (within ledger) sit side by side. Your great grandfather's entry is the top line, it confirms the details you mentioned in your first post, which research wise is a good thing, and it also provides your grandfather's army number (2692930) whilst in the ranks.

Note, large page cropped down to make for (hopefully) easier reading.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

  10. Jim,
This is unbelievable! the power of the internet ay? I cannot thank you enough for the work you've put in so far. I have some brilliant photos of him in the Scots guards and aware he served in Palestine (want to say 1936?) but that was it, let alone the dates he joined etc! Thank you!

Hello Charlie, I have found much more of your great grandfather's paperwork (including his Palestine medal register entry).

It is all in the public domain, courtesy of TNA/Scots Guards via a couple of their subscription based service partners.

As long as you are happy for me to I'll post it up here for you (it'll take me into the wee small hours but that's not a problem for an old insomniac like me! :) )

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

Here you are Charlie. Fourteen images (as found). You may have to crop/re-orientate/enhance to get them to an easier reading format for printing maybe.

I think the maximum number of attached images allowed per post is twelve, so the last two will be in the following post.

One query (to me!) document amongst them, maybe a misfile. My eyes are shot to bits now so I'll have a closer look at it tomorrow (today/sometime!).

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

And here's the last two images from the file Charlie.

Good luck with the sorting out side of things, and the write up/presentation of your grandfather's service. There will without doubt be more for you to find out, and I hope it all goes well for you.

Here's the "query/misfile" (as I originally thought) Charlie.

I've cropped it down to make it an easier read, and with refreshed eyes this morning I can see your great grandfather "Major Harding" is thanked within the body of the text, so hence why (I would guess) this letter is in amongst his paperwork.

The lady letter writer: not sure of her name ("Labelle Preston"?), but on 18th January 1956 she was writing from:

    7292 Barnet Road,
    Burnaby,
    British Columbia,
    Canada.

Given that she mentions "with regards to my late husband's diary" this maybe the denouement of some wartime tragedy, possibly (a deceased Canloan Officer maybe? Italy?). Is the red pencil within reference to an "MC"? (of the deceased husband?).

Need to decipher the lady letter writer's name, then we can move further on with it and hopefully solve it.

With luck one of our good Canadian (we have many!) forum members may see this and come up with a name for definite.

All speculation on my part at present, but it would be a good thing to get to the bottom of it, and the part your great grandfather played.

Kind regards, and good luck with all, always,

    Jim.

The home @ 7292 Barnet Road, Burnaby was last sold in 1993 and a new, large house was then built. The post code is: BC V5A 1E2

    (Not relevant passage removed).

I read her 1956 letter as depositing her late husband's diary.

As Jim H. (not Owen as wrote in error) has found Isabella Preston on the Voters List for the address in June 1953 with a Donald M. Preston, probably her husband? If he is the husband, then she has married again.

After a good time online enough for now.
