He was a Captain working with 5 Div General Staff in Feb 1940 He's recorded in all the officer field returns through to the Div's evacuation. Not sure what his job was.
After Captain CF Hutchinson's name, an odd one! ITC - which would indicate he was ERE- extra regimentally employed -Infantry Training Centre. Yet he is listed as being present. Maybe he is temporarily back on unit strength from ITC.
Hi all, I'm a new member, came across this thread, and though I see it's several years old now, I thought I'd just answer it in case it would still be helpful. Colonel Hutchinson was my maternal grandfather. His first name was Charles, but he always used his middle name, Francis - and was known to all as Frank.
My pleasure Nick. I was very surprised to come across this thread! Incidentally, where can I find the piece written by my grandfather which you mentioned in the original post? Charlie
Its in a document called Operation Acrospire, currently held by the Imperial War Museum. you can request a viewing in the research room. Jerry
I must ask, with your username, is Chink Dorman-Smith also a relative or is it merely a nom de plume?
I'm afraid it is indeed my real name... Chink was my other grandfather. Sadly, he died a decade before I was born, so I never had the opportunity to pick his brains.
Does the whole family now use the Dorman-O'Gowan version? He was a fascinating man from all I've read - controversial among his contemporaries as I'm sure you know. It's certainly a pleasure to have you on the board.
You may also be interested to see an essay about him (not written by myself), that I posted here some months back. Slightly hagiographic in tone, I confess, but interesting nonetheless: https://www.google.co.kr/url?sa=t&s..._cxj0ClYZ73U7A1ZA&sig2=z8NgpCehHYPEabFOU8_1jg
Thank you very much for the welcome! He was indeed a controversial chap, so one never quite knows what reaction to expect when people make the connection... My grandfather's direct descendants all use Dorman-O'Gowan; his brothers' direct descendants still use Dorman-Smith.
He was my great grandfather, I stumbled across this thread when I was looking for more information on him. He was named Charles Francis Hutchinson, and I have many documents of his from the war. He was at both Dunkirk, and D-Day, but was injured shortly after capturing multiple German positions at Sword Beach. I have his helmet, which was a mark 3, which I believe he wore at D-Day. After he recovered from his injury, he was transferred regiments, but I'm not sure quite which to. If you're interested I'll happily provide you with more information, I'm glad to see he's still remembered today.
Hi Nicholson You can if you wish apply for his service records - link - Request records of deceased service personnel - GOV.UK TD
Nicholson, Whether or not LondonNik calls back in and notices your post, I'm sure the rest of us would be interested to see any material on your great grandfather that you would like to share--I certainly would.
