    Nice pics Kuno. It looks a very clean city. Any 'thens' from the 1940's ?

    Cheers

    Benghazi has several "thens" most famous are those showing the respective troops (either Axis or Commonwealth) driving along the "Victory Street" with the two-cuppola cathedral in the background.

    Unfortunately the city is not that clean as you may think after seeing my above pics. However; a few years ago the gouvernment undertook - for the first time- serious steps to preserve the old Italian buildings. Hope that they continue these efforts!!!

    @ Kieron;

    Pic1) Cathedral. Still existing and under renovation now. Not used as church anymore...

    Pic2) Park still existing. City theatre in the bac of the photographer. Building in front was a hotel which is replaced by a quite ugly building with offices and flats.

    Pic3) Shows the still existing "Piazza 28. Ottobre" The buildings in the bakcground are stil there and as well the arrangement of the place is quite original. Hotel mentioned above would be just out of the picture on the left hand side.

    Wow, those pics are great! I was born in the British Military Hospital at Benghazi on 21st December 1950, there was a bad plane crash the same night. My mother has a few photo's but these are interesting, I will have to tell her as she would have loved to have returned there, it was the happiest time of her married life she reckons, too late now though.

    Pete.

    Unfortunately, the pictures we are seeing soon from Benghazi will be very bad ones. Ghaddafi has anounced that tonight the city will be attacked by him.

    Hopefully now the UN has passed it's resolution allowing for a no fly zone etc that the gaddafi loyalists will get a taste of what it is like when others have air superiority.

    Looks like he wants to get his armour into the city before the Allies and get their air into action -

    Oddest bloody ceasefire I've ever seen. We should have finished the bugger off in '86.

    Well that ceasefire didn't last very long - heard Obama's speech yesterday and woke up this morning and now it's all on!
