I am trying to find out a bit about a Sgt in the Para's that did not return from Arnhem. Now after his his details on CWG it has A.A.C now I can only guess what this means at the moment. Now it has nothing to do with his name as it has his full name already there. It is some thing to do with what he did and I would just like to be able to tell the person what it is.
would it be Army Air Corps example below Corporal COLIN GERALD FITZGERALD 14890801, The Glider Pilot Regiment, A.A.C. who died age 20 on 27 September 1945 Son of Francis Gerald and Florence Maud Fitzgerald, of South Harrow. His brother Desmond Francis also died on service. Remembered with honour HARROW (EASTCOTE LANE) CEMETERY regards Clive
Can you give a link to his listing on CWGC or tell us who he is ? Just to add if you put Arnhem, in the title you will get plenty of attenion to your query that if as Owen says you can tell us who he is.
He was Sgt Austin Ronald Francis 6349511 of the Parachute Regiment he was killed either on 18/19 September 1944 at Arnhem. There is a bit of information about him on ParaData along with a picture. On the CWG site they have the letters A.A.C after his name. From what I can make out he started with the Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment.
Here is the Paradata link to him, Austin R Francis | ParaData And here is some info from Special Forces ROH all it adds is that he was born in Wales, Austin Ronald Francis - PARAS - Special Forces - Roll Of Honour And as Clive and Owen say A.A.C can only be Army Air Corps
This wont help much but he is in 'the Tenth' in a pic, plate 22........ emplaning for Ex "Dinghy Drill" as part of Col Smyth's, stick trouble is his face is hidden, also listed in the ROH.
Tab I'm afraid that the page has suffered badly but this is all I could find. It would appear that Sgt Francis was last seen as 10 Para withdrew across the railway lines at Wolfheze. His place of first burial is recorded as the "Oder de Bomen" General Cemetery in Renkum. He may have been wounded, taken POW and died of wounds. The 10th was originally formed from the Royal Sussex but there were many people who volunteered for Parachute duties and were posted in from other units. John
