I have had heavy snow for two and a half hours now and more to come. It is proper old fashioned snow. Large flakes slowly falling and laying. Temperature hovering around freezing. My side road is passable for 4 X 4. The main road is passable but only an idiot or desperate person would venture out.

Very pretty watching from my window.

It will reach Goole any time now. (Private joke.)

Snowed steadily in our part of rural Co. Down all yesterday evening and early this morning. Save a few patches on lawns, etc, it was mostly gone by the time the gritter arrived here at 11 am.

Since my last post we have three times predicted a decent snowstorm, the first started promising but then turned to rain, the second only brought heavy rains. Because rain is one of the worst enemy of snow, in the end of the rains we had "only" 45 cm / 18 inches of snow but the third time was true, in about 12 hours we got some 30 cm or about 12 inches more snow and the snow depth is now about 73 cm, or about 28.7 inches.
-our backyard at 2 PM yesterday, before the blizzard
    - last night during the blizzard
    - quarter to 10 in the morning
    - a second one, the snowy landscape may be beautiful, but there was (too) much shoveling when we tried to keep our drive open.

On last Tuesday we had a snowfall, 2 inches of new snow. According to the TV weather forecaster the last decent snowfall of this winter, so our countdown to spring began with 24 inches of snow, up to today at least days have been sunny and mild, thaw at days and little frost at nights. Still good for cross-country skiing.

What a change. A few days ago I was basking in warm sunshine wearing only a shirt (and trousers of course). Today it is snowing, temperature 2 degrees and falling, plus a cold north wind. It did this last year and frost damaged all the fruit bushes and trees which had foolishly thought it was summer.

We got the Arctic Blast earlier, there was a fairly heavy snowing on Sunday night, and we got a couple of inches more snow, meaning the snow depth increased from 16 inches to 18 inches and, contrary to the promise of a TV meteorologist a couple of weeks ago, we had to do snow shoveling on Monday. Even today it snowed fairly heavily a couple of times but the total build-up of snow was not very great because the durations of snowing were short. We have had also beautiful days, yesterday was cold but with sunny spells.

    Juha,

Picture 2 must be the essence of Finland. Water, trees and snow. Beautiful at any time of year. We had 100% humidity with our snow. Not at all nice.

    Juha,

I don't know how you manage it. We have virtually no snow on the ground here in Toronto now but every cold day in which I see more snowflakes is like agony to me at this point. I just want it to be warm enough for me to sit outside, even in a coat.

You hear quite correctly. Several in TW1 throughout the day.

    I'll try again:

    Hello Mike
IMHO Finland is a beautiful country but often late autumn can be rather awful. Rainy and dark before we got permanent snow on terrain, then even if days are short the white ground makes nights brighter.

    Hello Chris
It's a bit what man has used to, maybe a month ago people were interviewed on TV in Ilomantsi, Finland's easternmost municipality. There was more than a meter/ 3 feet and 4 inches of snow there and about -10 to -15 degrees C. I smiled when one said that there is already enough snow but he misses some good frosts. BTW, just looked the weather forecast and it promises two blizzards next week, the first one giving 15 cm/6 inches more snow, the latter 25 cm/10 inches. Fortunately the Norwegian weather service, its forecast are often more accurate, promised only one blizzard which would bring only 8 cm, 3 inches more snow. So we'll see.

PS We got a pair of short spells of heavy snowing even yesterday. And also on Wednesday, see the photo.

Ok, it snowed almost daily during the week, but only to Wednesday we got a significant amount of snow, so on Monday we got some 2 inches, on Wednesday some 3.5 inches, on Thursday only short periods of light snowing, on Thursday night and on Friday rain, time to time even heavy rain and on Saturday again some snow. Because temperature have stayed above zero C even night-time after Thursday the snow has begun to melt. The heavy rain on Friday helped with that. When I noticed the Friday forecast on Thursday I went skiing, I only had to walk about 350 meters/ 380 yds to get to the place where I could start skiing. Shortly after the turning point of my route, it started to drizzle. I thought that that was the end of this skiing season but on Saturday noticed that only some 25 km/15 mls to the west there was still some 3 feet of snow, so maybe my cross-country skiing season will continue.

    Happy May Day!
Yesterday we had some snowfall but the ground was not cold enough for a permanent snow cover.

    Hello
A quick winter is here, began cautiously yesterday, will last, according to forecasts, about a week. Photos from yesterday's foretaste and this morning. About 4.5 cm, or less than two inches worth of more snowing for today is forecasted.
