Could you please assist with my query( I should know better but I dont)
I know there are threads about Lanyards (so mods please move as required)

This is Royal Artillery with a Lanyard/Braid (looks like a lanyard) on the left shoulder .Due to the photo being b&w not sure of its colour but it isnt white.Photo could be reversed but it is the original so assume Lanyard is on the left

Ok i shall stop now using the word Lanyard

    thank you for any replies

A number of RA units wore a different coloured lanyard as a carry over from their time as Infantry, Yeomanry etc. At least one Regiment wore a Rifle Green one from their time as a Rifle Regiment. I will check the relevant pages on my site and see what I can find.

Here are the instances of coloured lanyards I have managed to find with a link to the item on my Insignia pages:
181 Field Regiment RA - All ranks retained their green coloured Field Service Caps and officers kept their green lanyards and KSLI buttons
53 (King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA(TA) - Rifle green whistle cord (lanyard) was worn
112 (Durham Light Infantry) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA(TA) - Officers, Warrant Officers & Senior NCO’s wore a green lanyard in place of the white RA one
42 (The Robin Hoods, Sherwood Foresters) Searchlight Regiment RA(TA) - A Rifle Green lanyard was worn in place of the white RA one
47 (Durham Light Infantry) Searchlight Regiment RA(TA) - To continue the light infantry connection, a green lanyard was worn by officers, warrant officers and senior nco’s in place of the RA’s white one.
69 (3rd City of London) Searchlight Regiment RA(TA) - Officers & Warrant Officers wore a blue lanyard in place of the white RA one
There may be others that I haven't found yet. New information keeps turning up.

#4 "Officers .....wore a ...... lanyard in place of the white RA one". Did officers ever wear a white lanyard?
All pictures of my Dad (LAA Regt) show him with a khaki non-braided lanyard.

Tim, regulations (which of course were regularly ignored) only give details for the white lanyard for Other Ranks. The only lanyard permitted for Officers to be worn on the shoulder was a blue silk whistle cord. This was later changed to a drab coloured one but this item had been discontinued by 1933.
These rules did not take into account those items officially sanctioned for individual units (as above). Nor, of course, did it allow for the many semi or unofficial insignia seen during the war.
"Officers .....wore a ...... lanyard in place of the white RA one" should probably have "for those that wore one" added to it.
Sorry I can't be more specific than that.

Just for interest for members, as I have looked out some pics. See attached Two clips of lanyards OCTU Cadet and later 2/Lt (at his wedding). Only time he is pictured in No2 Dress No Lanyards in combat.

Note in the Wedding Pic he is wearing a dark tie probably because what he had handy, as he was off to war the following week.
