From what I understand, more than half of the Lancaster Bomber production was made in Chadderton. The large component parts were then taken to Woodford, assembled into bombers and then flown from there.

Does anyone know the route taken? I ask because it's a twenty mile journey along what would have been urban and suburban roads. Not exactly a low key task considering the size of the job. There must be photos and witness accounts somewhere.

FYI Woodford aerodrome is about a minute's drive from Alan Turning's post war house, where he committed suicide.

The Woodford Aerodrome Avro Heritage Museum is apparently scheduled to open later this year. Give them a call when they are up and running?

There must have been aircraft being roaded all over Manchester, not just the route between Chadderton to Woodford. Avros had numerous sites around Manchester and Oldham with flight sheds at Woodford and Ringway. Metropolitan Vickers also built Lancasters in Trafford Park which went to Ringway. Fairey aviation had their factory at Heaton Chapel and also sent their production (Halifax's) to Ringway for assembly and flight test.
