Mrs D is watching "Most Haunted" from this castle. I see it is near Arnhem and was ruined in WW2. Anyone have any info on who was fighting there? Doorwerth Castle Had a look for it on maps etc. It's west of Arnhem on the north bank of the Rhine. Would have been a German OP for sure.
Owen, do you have a copy of "'It Never Snows in September"? It doesn't mention the castle but does have a few pages about the fighting at the tail-end of Market Garden around Doorworth/Doerweth. In the index, it is Doorworth, but the German quotes refer to it as Doerweth (which is weird as I cannot find any such place on google!!) If you don't, I'll scan the pages tomorrow.
Kyt Don't have that one. Been looking at 43rd Wessex and 49th Polar Bears books but not found anything yet. GoogleEarth isn't working for me as yet but found castle moat on GoogleMaps. http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/gm/461930 Scan away chum!
Will do - but just for now: "General von Tettau had directed [SS Captain] Oelkers' battalion 'to form a bridgehead south of Arnhem over the Rhine.....[h]is unit was to cross by Castle Doerweth (sic) about 2000 metres south-west of the Driel ferry. Opposing them were units of the 5 Dorsets, later relieved by the paratroopers from the 101 Airborne Division" Anybody with info on either unit may be able to check for further references.
Cheers Kyt. Will look properly at my 43rd Wessex History later. Must "do" Arnhem soon. Now Mrs D seen this place that makes it easier to convince her.
Refers to the castle being full of SS snipers: Great find , Kyt. How did you find that? My searches are fruitless.
Great find , Kyt. How did you find that? My searches are fruitless. By being pig-headed and using warped logic (the only way to deal with google ). Typed in "Market Garden"+Doorwerth and it was second in the list.
As an asise I've just read the Introduction of "No Triumphant Procession" by John Russell (1994). Heinz Oelkers gets a mention as he helped that author with book. Sounds like an interesting chap to talk too. Wonder if he's still alive?
Owen. what were the results from Doorwerth on "Most Haunted"? (The "Ghost" link on the website linked on your first post didn't work). I'll be visiting Doorwerth in a few months and would like to know who else might be there! Dave
Dave, Most Haunted Investigation: Derek immediately makes a connection with witchcraft in the castle and also picks up the spirits of the two men who fought over possession of the one man's wife. He also detects the spirits of two German officers, killed at the castle during World War II. Karl bravely conducts a solo vigil in the cellar, where he hears footsteps and creaking noises, which grow into a continuous stream of bangs and crashes. In the attic and the Knight's Hall, other strange noises, some sounding like voices and horses hooves, are recorded. During a table tipping experiment, the table appears to move and vibrate of its own accord. Later, during a walk about of the castle, one of the staff is overcome, claiming to be possessed or affected by an unseen force and has to leave the building in tears.

Ghosts really are very unimaginative :p - sounds like every other bloody ghost-hunting programme, real and fictional.
Is Derek Acorn still on that programme? Biggest fraud I've ever watched. Wonderful watching all the little tricks he uses though. Genius some of them. And amazing what you can come up with if you do a little research on the building you are being taken into. Any of you ever want to go ghost hunting, let me know.
Any of you ever want to go ghost hunting, let me know. The only spirits I'm interested in come from bottles
Also used by some fallschirmjagers after the Battle and it was in Doorwerth Castle that the Airborne Museum started, before it moved in 1978 to Hartenstein Hotel
