    Hi all,

I would really like to go to the 60th anniversary of DDay, but i have my AS levels around the same time. However, if i am lucky i may have a day of on the 6th. I would only be able to go down there for a day or 2. Can anyone please help me, tell me where to start? I havent arranged a holiday before and i was wondering if it is possible to only go for this short period or would it have to be for longer?

    Thanks,

    Robert Wright

Whatever you decide, try and book NOW!!! Much of the accomodations are already booked up and the ferries/flights or whatever will be filling rapidly. In answer to your question, you'll be knackered at the end, but, yes, it is possible to do what you want (depending on your location that is, and what you want to do and see when you're over there).

PS. Ferries do sail direct into the "battle-zone" at Ouistreham.

You could visit the main sites in 1 or 2 days but usually only if you drive. I am not sure about the level of public transport in this region of France but there may be special arrangements for the anniversary period.

If you do drive you can book a hotel via your Ferry/Eurotunnel agent. This will save time and hassle of making seperate bookings. Bayernwald is right when he says you must book now.

    Good Luck

I would say your chances of finding a hotel, or even a ferry place, would be slim... the company are I do tours with are taking 28 coaches alone, and that's just one company. We have six of them going out on the night of 5th, arriving 6th and returning that night to arrive in UK the next day... and that was the last of the local ferry places to Normandy for that period filled up.

Your only option would be Dover-Calais, and drive, and then sleep in your car; but I would avoid the beach area as there will be heavy security.

    Hi Monty,

Please check out the many links on my website for tour companies offering guides from a few hours to a full day.

Also be advised that some companies are NOT doing tours as it will be way tooooo busy.

It will be nigh on impossible to get anywhere near arromances on 6th June as Paul says unless you are already staying there - even then it will be restricted due to security cordons for the British PM, French PM, German PM, The Queen and many others.

Ferries etc just the normal prices (unless like airlines they go up nearer). Its not cheap anytime by ferry (with a car) - If money is tight go on foot or go via eurotunnel and drive down for 1/2 price or less than a ferry crossing still if you don't mind a 4 hour journey from Calais.

There are still self catering gites available for the week commencing 5th June at:

http://www.gites-de-france.fr/eng/index.htm - it may pay to check out larger properties than you require as these often go last. Also check out Pays d'Auge just outside the area.

Also contact the Normandy Tourist board - quick!

What exactly is there to do in one day on the anniversary?

Are there any websites that show the different memorials?

    Thanks,

    Robert
