As some of you know, Owen and myself have just returned from a week in Italy visiting the WW2 battlefields of Anzio, Cassino, Minturno, Monte Camino, Ortona and the Sangro. No doubt we will flood the forum with reports and photos, but just a few photos to kick it off. First, this is the group of us who went, taken at Aquino aerodrome: L-R: Iain McHenry, Owen, Meurig Jones, Gary Cooper, myself. Lovely collection of knees, eh?
We found sangars, and mortar pits, especially around Snakeshead Ridge at Cassino. We also went to see a Tobruk pit at Aquino, and found the site of the Wadis at Anzio. More on all that soon!
Paul Welcome back ...... some good snaps there ! Did you spot the AJEX markers at Cassino ? Will wait for your report Cheers Ron
Did you spot the AJEX markers at Cassino ? No, they've all been removed , Ron. I made sure I kept an eye out for them but I didn't see one. I'll post more photos but at the moment catching up with family time. On the trip I also saw some new birds to me. Black Kite over Cassino War Cemetery. Bee Eaters over Anzio War Cemetery. Cirl Bunting on Snakeshead Ridge. Pallid Swift over the Castle. Serin at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery at Nettuno. Montagu's Harrier at Aquino. Italian variant of House Sparrow everwhere. At the foot of Monte Camino is the village of Mieli, I found this flattened ammo box at the bottom of the mule track. I had to be nosey and opened it up. This little chap was inside.
This was the view from our room, I was sharing with Iain. The bells were ringing the morning of Sunday 18th May. 64 years after the Poles took the ruins. Not a very good video but thought I'd share it anyway. The same view the morning we left. Saturday 24th.
