Apart from a couple memorials in and around Ortona ( compliments of Tom Canning, Owen and Paul Reed from my trip in 2010) would any forum members know of Canadian Memorials in and around the Gothic Line. I know of the memorial at Hill 204 but apparently there are very few others?

    Thanks in advance

You have just hit a sore spot with me as the memorial at Hill 204 ( Tombe de Pesaro) was an idiotic charge by the BC dragoons unsupported by Infantry in which they lost their C.O. - the younger brother of the Divisional Commander of 1st Div -
this memorial while it lauds the performance of ALL Canadian Regiments , bdes and Divisions and support troops - FAILS miserably to mention the support and sacrifices of 21st Tank Bde who lost some 30 odd Churchill Tanks and 306 men in that battle in support of 1st Cdn Inf Div - the argument being that we didn't belong in the Cdn Corps - sheesh

    Cheers

while the official list of Cemeteries are duly recognised as
" memorials" to the dead - what Randy is apparently looking for in quoting that one at Hill 204 - is the memorial to those who took part in the battles for their vicinities such as Hill 204 thus making it a memorial to the living......hence my annoyance with that one- and bad spelling as it is CESENA not casano where my good friend Walter Pollard is buried-
Walter was the gunner of our captured Panther PzMkV - who unfortunately stepped on a Schu mine while refuelling the monster

    Cheers

one of the most memorable memorials of the Gothic Line battles was when I was in Riccione after visiting the Coriano Ridge Cemetery and I took the film into the local shop for developing - it was taking a long time and I wondered about this - then it hit me that the backroom staff were coming out to see this relic of '44 and all were wishing him
Bouna Fortuna - so they hadn't forgotten how we liberated them......

    Cheers

    Tom,
When did you visit Riccione for the second time?

Wills, as always...thanks for the research.

September 2005 - i had forgotten the monsoon so spent the first day at Coriano

and was hotel bound for the rest of the week - just a quick dash to the restaurant and

back on the day I left - the sun came out - typical planning

    Cheers
