Introducing Myself

Hi. I came across this forum by accident whilst looking for more detailed information about the 5th recce regiment.

My deceased father Henry Herbert Game was a member of the unit from it's Inception until near it's disbandment. He had previously been in the Tower Hamlets Rifles. I have in my possession his medals, some photos and a hard copy of the Wheeled Odyssey booklet.

5 Recce Regt were part of 5 Infantry Division who were known as the Globetrotters and not without reason.

5 Infantry Division landed at Reggio di Calabria on 3 Sep 43, were at the crossing of the Garigliano in Jan 44 and spent months at Anzio. They ended the war in NW Europe. Quite a journey.

5th Reconnaissance Regiment was formed in 1941 in the 5th Division from 3rd Battalion the Tower Hamlets Rifles, The Rifle Brigade, which had been raised in 1940. Sailed for India in March 1942. The regiment served in Persia and Syria before joining the 8th Army for the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 where it experienced heavy fighting before deploying to Italy becoming the first unit of the Corps into Italy to serve with the 5th and 8th Armies, including Anzio. Left Italy in June 1944 and then came up from the south of France. Withdrawn to North West Europe for the final phases of the war. Taking part in the last drive into Germany after the Rhine crossing.

Colin, I would highly recommend getting a copy of George Aris’s history of 5th Division’s war. It’s readily available and well worth the read. Some here, for example:
