Hi George - thanks for your posts. I will rummage through the 458SQN ORB to see what else pops up. I wanted to make sure I had the right bloke first.

It is nice that you are interested in my story, but as this is a ww2 forum myself (& others) really want to hear from you.

Feel free to regale us with whatever stories you have, it is the little details that are missing from the official records & history books. Such as the question previously as to how your aircraft was lost over Bulgaria.

The snippets of info about the Captain of your aircraft in 458SQN ignoring a warning and nearly colliding with a large land mass or the treatment you had on the ground in Bulgaria - that's the stuff that makes a story.

But since you asked for it - here are some bits of info on me: not quite 50 years old and still serving in the RAAF after enlisting at 18.

I'm not aircrew - not quite an erk either but what your blokes would have called a shiney-bum back in the day.

Like Spidge who posted greetings to you earlier I help collect photos of war graves to assist family historians etc. I also have spent a bit of time researching RAAF losses in WW2 - luckily the bulk of that was done a few years ago by an RAAF WW2 aircrew veteran and I have just tried to fill in the gaps.

Years from now when there is a "Afghanistantalk.com forum" then someone might be interested in some of my wartime recollections but until then I confine myself to former conflicts.

    cheers

    Dave

Apologies George, I've only just seen your reply after another forum member pointed it out to me.
I was away in America for the first couple of weeks of April and only checked the forum very occasionally. I missed your reply then.

Do you remember if you were given any informaiton about leaflet raids or did you see examples of the ones you were dropping? I understand it wasn't a particularly welcomed chore for aircrew. Do you remember how the leaflets were dropped at that time? Later a special bomb was developed that held the leaflets in the bomb bay but before that more Heath-Robinson methods were used I understand.

Was you lucky enough to get any escape and evasion lectures and aids before ending up in Sofia?
I have this interesting MI9-issued 'Blood chit' that was supposed to help in that situation. Wonder if they did any good?!

My background is just a personal interest in what is know as 'psychological warfare' and airdropped leaflets. Have quite a large collection of the latter and produce the website: http://www.psywar.org

    Thanks and best wishes,

    Lee

Hello DaveB Ref your welcome on the 24th Mar. I did respond to this with something of
my history with 458 Sqdrn but cannot trace a reply. I am in regular contact with Jules
who tells me that she has ascertained that you did respond - perhaps I am going wrong somewhere --
not surprising I:m a bit of a nit wit as regards computing. Prthaps you could put me in the
picture? Cheers George. Green
