We've got a new Veteran join us. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/members/green.html Had trouble finding his way around the forum so I'll post this here. Hi All; I am a new visitor to this spot so if I make a hash of things please excuse me. My name is George Carey and I live in the county of Surrey situated 20 miles south of London. UK. i am a veteran air crew member of the R.A.F.flying in Wellingtons. I was first attached to 458 Squadron Coastal Command operating from N.Africa on anti submarine patrols. Following this I moved to Southern Italy on Bomber Command operating from Foggia . During one of our trips the engines of our Wellington packed up and we had to bale out over Bulgaria - axis member. Anyway we were picked up and after a few days we were taken to a POW camp in Shumen. There were already about 300 chaps there - mainly American Airmen who went out of their way to welcome us. We stayed here for 4/5 months until the Russians came along and released us. We got back to our squadron via Turkey-Syria-Egypt-Italy. Following this I was repatriated back to the UK and spent the remainder of my flying days instructing glider pilots from Brizenorton in Oxfordshire and Elsham in Lincolnshire. I'm now an old codger of 91;; Hope this is of some interest to somebody out there. Cheers. George
Hi Owen, Please pass on a hearty welcome to George from this 90 plus, not feeling so old, codger. Cheers for now, Gerry
Hi George - welcome aboard and I look forward to hearing more. Attached is a page from the 458SQN (RAAF) Operational Record Book / Unit History which is available online (free) via the National Archives of Australia (NAA). I guess that is you flying as a Sergeant Wireless Operator in Wellington "J" on the 16th of October 1943 on a U-Boat hunt off Cp De Fer with Flying Officer Way as the Captain / Pilot.
A very warm welcome to the forum George. Got to ask, as it's my pet subject, did you do any Nickel drops while in Italy? Best wishes, Lee
