My father was posted to 15th Recce Regiment 28 Feb 46. The regiment was dispersed 1 Apr 46. His record says 27 Apr 46 posted to Y.LIST/Y(A).
He was released to Army Reserve 14 Jul 46.
Does anyone know what Y.LIST/Y(A) means

As far as I understand it, the Y list was and is the means of accounting for personnel who are not where they were initially posted: - in hospital, at reinforcement or holding units, being taken on or struck off strength, transferred to other units, even outside the army, like secondments to the War Office. At that point in time, i.e. 1946, this is probably the start of the process of being demobbed. 'The army Y List was composed of 'non-effectives' with a listing of 1 to 8 sick, detention , leave pending discharge etc'. (From Arrsepedia) As he was placed in the Army Reserve 14/7/46, a date of 27/4/46 may be leave prior to discharge - I don't have the 8 categories from the Y list. Y(A) I don't know about - could it be Y(4)?

    This from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/32/a8594832.shtml

"The army ruling at one time was that if a soldier had been in hospital for 21 days or more he was put on the Y-list; which meant that when he became fit for duty he was sent to a holding unit and then could be sent to any unit other than his own. This, in most cases, was not a popular move which, I believe under the orders of General Montgomery, was changed. The ruling became that if a soldier was in hospital for 21 day when wounded or sick for 30 days he was entitled to seven days home sick leave and then would return to his own unit if they wished or could be transferred to another unit."

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable may correct me, but I think that's broadly it.

    Thanks for that Brian.
Looking at the Tracer Card again, it could read :

    Pt. II
    Orders Date Posted Unit
    Y.L/7/1080/46 27.4.46 Y.LIST/7 (A or 4)

You're welcome, but it really helps if you can scan and post a picture of records here, then everyone can have a look and you'll get a wider range of opinions. Searching this forum is probably the best bet as a first option too as abbreviations cause everyone headaches and have been discussed widely.
