In Graham's The History of the Indian Mountain Artillery there is a table listing the Regiments, and assigned Batteries on an annual basis. For 1941 the 5th (Bombay) Battery is listed as a unit of the 25th Mountain Regiment at Waziristan, and the 23rd Battery is listed as a unit of the 20th Mountain Regiment at Quetta. Both batteries were in Burma in December 1941, so they obviously were detached from their original Regiments & moved to Burma during the year. Can anyone provide the details on their move? Thanks!

23rd Mountain Battery embarked for Burma on 14 June 1941. On 27 November 1941, RHQ 27th Mountain Regiment and 5th Mountain Battery embarked for Burma.

Thanks! I read in Graham's book that the 27th Mountain Regiment & 5th (Bombay) Battery arrived in Rangoon in December and the Regiment then took over the other mountain batteries. But, it wasn't clear when that occurred. If they left India on November 27th, they should have reached Rangoon before December 8th.

If I can ask one more question, Graham has the 28th Mountain Regiment (with the 15th & 28th Batteries) arriving in Rangoon on February 14th. From what I have been able to find, the 28th Mountain Regiment was raised in January 1942, and the 15th Battery came from the 25th Mountain Regiment, but I have nothing on the 28th Battery. Can you tell me anything about it?

28th Mountain Regiment with 15th and 28th Mountain Batteries embarked for Burma on February 9th, 1942. The mules and drivers failed to land and were returned to India. All I have on the 28th Mountain Battery is that it was formed in Peshawar from drafts from the 24th Mountain Regiment to serve with the 28th Mountain Regiment, which was also formed in Peshawar on January 1st, 1942. I would assume that the 28th Battery might also have been formed on January 1st, 1942.

First entry in the WD of 28th Mountain Battery is from 4th January 1942, in Peshawar

    G.H.Q. India No.69 B/7/A.C. (C.I) received - orders to Mobilize by 25 Jan.42

It embarked on S.S. Erinpura on the 8th February and sailed a day later, on the 9th. Arrived in Rangoon on 14th, disembarked on the same day, and moved to Taukyan South Camp.
