Hello all, I have a couple of questions regarding the attached extract from the service record of a casualty of the 2nd Bn, The Royal Berkshire Regiment, I am researching. My questions are: 1. Why are the two entries for service in India recorded as 'Indian' and then 'British'? 2. Is it possible that this man returned to the UK within these two periods of service in India? There is no leave recorded on his record ... Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Skip
I think it has something to do with the date, 1st April 1939. Possibly on this date, any British unit (infantry, artillery, etc.) serving in India transferred from Indian Service to British Service. For example, on 1st August 1939, all Mountain Artillery Regiments in India transferred from the Royal Regiment of Artillery (British Service) to the Indian Regiment of Artillery (Indian Service). Perhaps, some other member has more information on this topic.
Dryan67 - thanks for this. Yes, it does look like it may be a cut-off point of some sort. Hopefully someone can confirm ...
