    Moderators all ! :D

Salutations from one of your forum members who, purely by chance, happens to come under the category of WW2 Veterans.

I would start by emphasising that we, as a breed, are not here to create divisions but merely to ask for an understanding of the slant that we inevitably have when discussing matters that occurred during our formative years, namely those between 1939 and 1945.

My reason for posting on this particular occasion is that I am interested in the statistics of who and how many so called "WW2 Veterans" there are on this forum and how many of them are regarded as still being "active". An actual list would be very helpful.

I started trawling through the members list but it's a bloody long winded job and I am likely to include members who havn't posted for years do, so, if it's not too much trouble, could one of our hard working moderators post an index of WW2 veterans ?

    Thanks in advance !

    Ron

    marcus69x I love WW2 meah!!!

    Good idea Ron, I agree.

I remember a while I back, I counted about 13 vets in the members list, but there's only a few of you who post regularly.

Would be nice to have a little list or link to a list somewhere on the portal?

Under the Data Protection Act, I'm not allowed to reveal that info.
    :)
Cos I dunno how to.... :)

I've just searched the Admin section & we have 38 members listed as Veterans.

I could be wrong but I thought there was a thread attempting something like this before.

Don't know what the other mods think, or indeed what opinion all you WW2 veterans would hold, but I'm not sure about putting a list on the forum Ron.

Reason being, I'm a bit wary of it turning into a one-stop-shop for the PM'ing of veterans - with lots of those type of questions, the answers to which could easily be found by searching here for previous responses.

Surely on the basis that they have agreed to be given the title "WW2 Veteran" and that title is open for all to see how does that contravene the Data Protection Act?

Coming back on my previous comment, I was not voting for or against a list I was jts wondering how the D.P.A. would be concerned.

Tony, I think Owen was joking about the DPA.

Our fear is the Vets would be hassled by people who are not regular members of the site. The regulars know what a pleasure and honour it is to have the veterans here and treat them with the respect they deserve. We wouldn't want the veterans put off from visiting due to too many 'silly' questions.

It was indeed a mild joke, an excuse NOT to publish a full list of Veterans.

Ahhh a cunning plan baldrick.... Now then...what about a list of none ww2 vetrans...That way we extract the ww2vets from members. and also extract the michael..von poop...a five minute job easilly...and an excel sheet with pretty colours. alternately..a CLOSED group of ww2 vets for their access only for their private use?

    Hmmm,
It's not really my place to make lists of anyone. I do agree that it could conceivably lead to you chaps getting quite a bit more direct hassling.

Of the 38/39 Owen Mentioned, I'll say that most have popped in fairly recently, some have been away for 6 months plus

Some of the vets that we have confirmed don't actually have any posts. This means they don't show on the member list. It's possible they prefer it that way.
I know of a few other members that are veterans, but have either not come forward, or have declined to be identified.-

Some WW2 Veterans won't mind a list, but I don't know how others may feel about privacy.

Alternative ways of doing this maybe?

Veterans that wish to mention their presence could post to this thread, if retitled and pinned?

Or it could be a use for the 'social groups' feature - make a group entitled 'WW2 Veterans' or similar, and chaps that wish to can sign up there?

That way it's voluntary, without inflicting anything on anyone.

Just as a matter of interest, does the forum have a strict definition of the title 'Veteran'?
Obviously, it applies to those who served in the Armies, Navies and Airforces of the various participant countries of WWII but does it extend any further? Would ex members of the Merchant Marine, NFS/AFS, ARP, Police, Ambulance, Land Army, Bevan Boys etc., qualify for the 'purple moniker'?
    Tom.

    It's not fully defined Tom.
We did have a thought a while back that the issue of one particular universal medal could make it 'official', at least for UK participants (can't remember which - poor on medals), but essentially it's always going to be a judgement call. I can't say I wouldn't sort a Rosie the Riveter who joined with the purple identifier (If they wanted it).
Slightly subjective business, & don't think we have any who I've spoken to in my time here that weren't 'conventionally' serving in an armed force (Maybe one Merchant Mariner), but I'd probably find it hard not to include some that served in other ways.

By the By, I got some private messages from others asking for lists of veterans (I was away for the last 2 days and only just picked them up) - I'm declining here, as I have for other such requests over the last three years.

If someone asked me for a list of all our members that are under 16 I'd have said no; similarly I'm not likely to compile other custom lists.

I'm commenting on this old thread of Ron's mainly to say how bloody lucky we were to have so many actively engaged WW2 Veterans on this site for so many years.
It won't be the same without them .
Some were a bloody pain at times with some of their comments where normal members would have been banned.

It was an honour to have spent so many years with them online.
    Cheers chaps.
