I see that the USS Carl Vinson is sailing into the Persian Gulf because of the current Iran Israel conflict. It occurred to me that it has been in commission far longer than any warship was during WWII. The oldest warship in WWII that I can think of was the Schleswig-Holstein and she was only in commission for 32 years by 1940 and Carl Vinson is already at 43 years and counting.

USS Constitution was in commission during WWII IIRC.

Jika-tabi? No, a Roman Legionary sock as displayed in the British Museum exhibition last year, for wearing with sandals during cold weather.

ltdan's latest avatar reminded me of being told by an easy-on-the-eye Australian female soldier that real men don't wear socks with sandals. A few days later, the real men trying to catch her eye were painfully hobbling about with lobstered feet adorned by insect bites, whilst Miles Didn't-come-down-the-Tiber-on-a-water-biscuit had no such grief.

Looking forwards to an avatar of sandals being worn with Fusslappen, although after today's rain, maybe time to dig-out the old ventile birrus britannicus?

Back in the '90s I heard an airplane go over and looked up. This was in rural Indiana and THAT was a ZERO! Immediately followed by a P-48. I screamed at my brother-in-law: "AIRPORT NOW!" The Confederate Air Force was coming in for fuel. Got to sit in the co-pilot seat on a B-17F. (or -E, forget exactly.)
