How many men in the British army in ETO early 1945?

    Hello all,

I'm struggling to get a sense of the commitment of the British army in ETO (North-West Europe) early 1945. I am looking for the total pool of manpower, esp. to compare with the US Army. I especially wish to get enough details to compare the resources tighted up with the lines of communications in both armies.

Some research gave me a more than decent picture of the US situation.

When it comes to British (and later, to Canadians), a bottom-up approach gives a sense of the "armed ground forces": OdB in Ellis and other sources lists all units, then TO&Es and the Trux section of the forum yield manpower by unit. My numbers are not final, but sum up to 300 000 British men as of Jan 1st, 1945.

[of course comes the question whether units at are full strength. I found a source stating they are, partly thanks to the disbanding of 50th ID in December 1944].

    What I now lack:
    - the manpower in the RAF (without Bomber Command, to be able to compare with the US)
    - manpower outside units proper, for ex still in the UK but 100% working for 21 AG; in the Rear Maintenance Area(s), doing pure logistics at Antwerp etc. In the US Army, this is the COMZ staff: 657 000 men by Dec 31st, 1944!

What would you recommend to be solve this puzzle?
