D, don't know if you've noticed from up there in your Ivory tower... but one of the reasons people often dislike Macs and their more evangelical users, is their unutterable smugness... :p Everything nice and safe in your Time Machine©® is it?
Everything nice and safe in your Time Machine©® is it? ... you really know how to twist the knife ... realised last night all my previous backups from all the old burnt out laptops were on it... good job I kept their innards. D (who's fallen down a peg or two) B)
I label each folder by name of the unit, then within that subdivide by individual war diary numbers, with brackets at the end for the year range so I don't get lost amidst diaries that cover the same time frame. And yes I back mine up on an external hard drive!
Ok I will ask an obvious question. It is clear a lot of people are going to Kew and photographing the documents. It is even clearer that a lot of duplication is going on and certain documents get multiple visits. Would it not be simpler and less bother if the results were shared and then some of the more obscure Units could be copied for a change. Now it may be that some people do not want to share their stuff and I may be stepping on some toes but it just seems a pool of the data would be a far better idea than extracts dotted all over the place. I think there is a crying need for a site dedicated to British Unit Documentation and it would help bring forward those interested in the area but who have no access to Kew and the originals. For my part I hope one day to copy the post war Unit History Books and put them all up in one place. This would be a great help tpo those who can not afford the 60 pounds plus normaly charged for these books on the second hand market. Tell me why this is not a good idea?
I couldn't agree more MK, which is why I suggested Drew upload 'em to here. Unit History The sharing of this core info seems to me to be a most sensible and civilised use of it. So many people find so much more about whatever they're looking for, whether family or operational history, once they get their hands on a war diary. We have some more specific ideas relating to this in the future, but it awaits tweaks to the forum software. In the meantime I say get 'em shared and as widely available as possible.
Some quite impressive collections there fellas. Phaethon, I love them posters you do. Quality mate. Keep 'em coming.

OMG-If you had done his uniform in DPM I would think you had a camera looking in my bedroom. and the fact that he's far better looking than you....... :p
Adam, that sounds like a superb idea, what a brilliant source for researchers. I can however see a potential flaw in how people reference their files (making searches easier and avoiding duplication, sure you have considered this). Are there plans to perhaps throw facility this wider than war diaries? Mike
I just ordered one of these today thanks to the tip off from Rob (Ramacal) Buy IOMEGA 3.5IN 1TB HARD DRIVE | 1tb 3.5" external hard drive - Specification | Comet
Drew/Ramacal Nice to see you have got some sense and bought external drives, the next thing is back up all your files weekly and keep the drive seperate from your computer/laptop.
Drew/Ramacal Nice to see you have got some sense and bought external drives, the next thing is back up all your files weekly and keep the drive seperate from your computer/laptop. I've had the sense for years and am amazed at how many people don't back up their stuff. This is my 3rd external drive as the other 2 are full.
Rob, The Hard Drive arrived earlier today (Cheers for the tip!). The only problem is-it's saying 23,852 pictures (I didn't realise I had that many WW2 related pictures) taking 23hrs and 37mins to copy !
Andy Just done a check through my photos file and I have a similar amount of pics. I bet other members probably have more. Imagine if you lost that lot because you had not backed them up. Before digital cameras arrived, I hated taking pics because of the aggro involved. Since then, over 20,000, like yourself. The majority since joining this site 2 years ago. (How surprising. Feels like it was only yesterday). Looked forward to confirmation you've completed the task.
I also did a search on my Hard Disks, looking purely for jpg images. As you can see, more than 80,000. Blimey !...... it's a good job I've got backup. Ron
