Home Guard, died 20 November 1943: CWGC

  1. Yes, that's his eldest son, and my father :)

  2. I never knew this, and I my late father never mentioned any of his fathers siblings. I did meet the youngest brother Anthony when I was about 10 or 11 in the early 70's as he had lived in a Salvation Army retirement home in Whitechapel.

  4. Aahh..... that was my late Mum who told me about the ATS graves and wondered if there was a connection......she can't have been wearing her glasses!
Sad to say its been probably nearly 15 years since I was last at the grave, and not since Mum mentioned the ATS graves. My late Mum stopped going in the late 2000's when she went and found some youth doing drugs near the grave, and she never went back on her own.
I suspect I'll never find out what really happened, as the few who did know have been gone for 20 years plus now.

    As an example
There are a number of civilian individuals commemorated on CWGC with
"Died as the result of an illness contracted while on duty"

Also there are many civilians commemorated by CWGC who were in the Home Guard but were killed whilst off duty in air raids

I think it is safe to say whilst on Home Guard duty he was taken unwell and then succumbed to his illness hence the reason he is commemorated by CWGC.Although the CWGC detail would not mention this.

Im a bit late to this thread (been mooching around looking for 'stuff' on the Home Guard - more out of interest, really - as I'm researching for an MA dissertation on the Home Guard.) Some good detective work here as well - well done!
