Holocaust Memorial Day

Remembering Otto Urbach, murdered in Auschwitz sometime after 19 August 1942. His wife Etelka had managed to reach England in 1939 as she had an occupation in demand: housemaid. Otto, who escaped from Austria with Etelka, was not allowed to accompany her to Britain by the British Government. He was interned in Belgium then deported to Auschwitz. Etelka worked as a maid for the then owners of my house.

On 27 January 2024, the UK will commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. This year’s theme, as chosen by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, is ‘Fragility of freedom’.

The Holocaust Memorial Day theme for 2025 is "For a Better Future". BBC Breakfast this morning (7th January) showed an interview and presentation at Westminster School by Professor Peter Lantos, a Holocaust survivor.

The piece also mentioned his recent book, first published 2 years ago, called "The Boy Who Didn't Want to Die", written about his experiences in Belsen with his parents at the age of five.

Today's BBC coverage of the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The recollections of some of the survivors were very moving. It is unimaginable that anyone should experience such atrocities first hand.

Remembering today the deported Jews of Uhlirske Janovice, Czechoslovakia, the home of my great-grandmother Francheska Kaplan. Never forget.

 

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2026 is Bridging the Generations, the idea being that remembrance of the Holocaust should not end with the survivors, but continue to live on through successive generations.
