HMS Warspite-ship crest

    Hi
    Help needed
    I have photos referring to Warspite [1913-1947] showing a crest with a cannon and another with a woodpecker. Which one is correct?

    Hello Roy,
    Both I think are correct one being official (cannon) and the other unofficial (woodpecker)

    The name Warspite’s origins are cloudy and unsure it may well have been War (spight) itself a contraction of despight meaning contemptuous defiance, another explanation is that it was originally Woodspite, a woodpecker, a bird which punched holes in wood with it’s beak much as a wooden warship would punch holes in the wooden sides of the opposition with its cannon , the woodpecker was part of Warspite’s unofficial crest

    I just this minute googled 'Warspite cat' and up came a photo of the ship watchman looking through a lifebelt. The unofficial crest adorns the belt
