    Morning all,

I'm hoping some of you fine fellows may have a little more information than i have presently been able to dig up. My grandfather was W/T.3 (leading Telegraphist) John Rodney Beaumont Storm who served aboard HMS Tiptoe (among others) during the war and coined her unofficial motto "Per Silentium Persequimur". I'm trying to find info on the W/T shack and the telegraphists role, her name as well as any more information anyone might have.

A few nuggets of interesting info to kick off:

    • Moira Shearer a film star of the time presented Tiptoe with the Ballet shoes she wore in "the Red Shoes". These are on display at the Submarine museum. There is a lovely photo somewhere of ballerinas dancing on her deck as she came into port.
    • She starred in the film "Morning Departure" where she was used for external shots to play the part of HMS Trojan. Sometimes this seems to be attributed to "We dive at Dawn" but i think that is incorrect.
    • (Still need to double check this) Made the last torpedo attack of the war.
    • Was the first all welded T-Class which increased her diving depth by 50ft. Was ironically later depth charged in 40ft of water.
    • Her anchor is now part of a memorial at Blyth

    What i have so far:

I have the records from HM Submarine Museum Gosport for HMS tiptoe.

Uboatnet is very good but there are some errors and omissions which i have emailed them about. Therefore i would like to check where they get their data from. There is nothing mentioned and the patrol information is very detailed. I want the originals.

Checked first 25 pages of google results for HMS tiptoe (No-one mention bloody Gilbert and Sullivan) and this is what i have found relevant (I have no links to any of these sites, i provide them here as they may save others a long and nautical musical drenched search).:

EDIT 9.58am: Navy list Apr 1945 - Thanks Wills
EDIT: 11:09am: Tiptoe in Australia as reported by the local newspaper. Nice to hear she was a happy ship.
EDIT: 20/12: The T Class subs design good for flavour and nice blueprint. Thanks to Urqh.

There are also various photos of her rusting at Pounds on her sale for scrap after 1970.

Regarding the name Tiptoe, it is well noted about the internet that she was named by Churchill over admiralty objections (one of only 2 subs named by him). However none of these mentions have any attribution for source. My grandfather said much the same, and that Churchill took an ongoing interest in her activities. Not that i disbelieve him but there has never been a Tiptoe since so i'm interested to see if there is any heated correspondence on the matter or whether i can even check where it originated.

    • Wiki lists a Times article from 1981 as the source.
    • (Thanks to auchonvillerssomme)This is the only entry in British Warship Names by Capt TD Manning and CDR C.F Walker (1959):

    • "Ships' Names and Badges Committee minutes for 1940 to 1946 make no reference to TIPTOE. General Admiralty correspondence is in TNA (Kew), Sir Winston’s personal papers are mostly held in the Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge." Helpful poster seaJane at a WW1 forum.
    • Churchill's diaries feature people tiptoeing into and out of his office constantly but nothing on a submarine by that name.

If anyone can help with the name it would be brilliant, i can't get back further than '59. Also does anyone have access to the T-Class submarines by Paul Kemp? All information on the W/T shack or grandfathers role appreciated. Especially interested to hear where the heck uboatnet has got their information from. Many thanks in advance, Edit: the tiptoe in Australia link also states, named by Churchill. Back to 1945.

    James

Edit: Ill add links into this first post as i get them to save the threads piling up and ease of access.
