Whilst researching another thread I started about Leonard Rossiter's father, John, who died in the May Blitz of Liverpool in 1941, I found the following information. I couldn't find any similar thread on a search of the forum, but found this interesting/amusing enough to post.

Adolf Hitler's half brother, Alois, had once lived in Liverpool; link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_Blitz

"After the raids in May 1941, the German air assault diminished... The last German air raid on Liverpool took place on 10 January 1942, destroying several houses on Upper Stanhope Street. By a quirk of fate one of the houses destroyed was number 102, which had been the home of Alois Hitler, Jr., half brother of Adolf Hitler and the birthplace of Hitler's nephew, William Patrick Hitler. The house was never rebuilt and the whole site was eventually cleared of housing and grassed over."

The Hitler family's real and supposed links with the Northwest have been mentioned on the forum before. See:
    http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/13739-did-hitler-save-blackpool/?hl=rochdale#entry153898
The legend of Adolf's fondness for Rochdale Town Hall has proved particularly tenacious and has been mentioned to me in conversation by various Rochdalians over the years. Like many urban legends it seems impossible to establish where it came from or conclusively kill it off (cf the stories of Henry Tandey VC saving Hitler's life, Churchill sacrificing Coventry to preserve the Enigma secret, crated Spitfires in Burma, gold trains in Poland etc etc)

We had a thread on this biglongtimeago that was powered along by a chap who was the main motive force behind the Hitler Liverpool story.
I have a dim recollection that it went completely batshit as the chap took personal offence at anyone who questioned a single word. Certainly recall finding the whole thing rather amusing but have another suspicion the thread was eventually binned as he just wouldn't let it lie.

Hmm. [member='Owen'], oh living memory of the forum - any thoughts on where it may now be?

    Joe Hitler

    William P Hitler

    Alois Hitler marriage cert details:

    Name: Alois Hitler

    Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun
    Registration district: St Marylebone
Parishes for this Registration District: View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
    Inferred County: London
    Volume: 1a
    Page: 1115

There is also a family tree for Adolf

    Adolf Hitler
    Birth: 20 April 1889 (20 Apr 1889) - Austria
    Death: 30 April 1945 (30 Apr 1945) - Mitte, Berlin, Germany
    Father: Alois Hitler

I am quite surprised at the number of Hitler families that lived in the UK, some going back into the 1800's

I didn't consider the cyber 'dickheads', VP. Just thought it was an interesting/amusing thread to start the New Year with. If it starts going the wrong way, please just ask Owen to bin the thread...

Kyle - I only ever recall some comedian referring to Hitler living in Liverpool, as part of his act. I never thought there was any truth in it; well, a Hitler family member living there to be precise...

Mark - I did find the thread you provided the link for, but thought it was all about Blackpool and Rochdale and didn't hone in on the brief mention you made to this story; apologies.

    KJ Jr - Thanks!

Contrary to reports that he was alive after the war in South America, I have heard that AH actually lived in Minehead after 1945 under the name of Gitler.

Did he keep in touch with Martin Bormann, who settled in the Home Counties after being rescued from Berlin by Ian Fleming? (At least according to that loopy book 'Operation JB'.)

Really wish I could find this thread now. Chappy got into the nationals etc. Got the impression he'd triggered a few of those articles Jinks cites.
I have a sneaking suspicion he may have died.
The bloke, that is. Pretty sure Hitler did. Probably.

I'd always assumed Hitler had a number of "doubles" on the go - and any "so called" pictures of him after the war were most likely them (or Chaplin I suppose ;) )

Bit like Saddam perhaps. A job at the time someone "had to do" but one with plenty of pitfalls both before and after I guess.

Always wonder why there wasn't more made of the conspiracy that Hitler was actually killed in the Wolf's Lair Valkyrie plot and thereafter his cronies shifted up no. 1 double to his post no less. All his errors there after hence were "not his own". Pulp fiction and dross but Da Vichi code et. al and the Pyramids/Chariots of the Gods covers copy and does the tour so someone buys this guff... :P

There was always a story - and still is - about Hitler's ice skates being on show in a glass case in the old Silver Blades - the old Liverpool Palace Ice rink built in 1931 on Prescot Road - about 2.5 miles away from Alois's flat in Upper Stanhope Street but a handy tram ride or two and a popular destination. No -one can ever prove it of course....I do love a good urban myth.

If he was like other such leaders then he might well have had a couple of doubles. However, nobody who was not the greatest actor in history could have done that utterly typical screaming fit he had when the Italians arrived immediately after the assassination attempt.

There was a trashy thriller written in the late 70s or 80s based on the idea that Hitler was assassinated and replaced by a double. In this version of history the real Hitler was a military genius. Only Bormann knew about the switch so the rest of the leadership obeyed the double, who was not a military genius.

In this tale, it was the 1943 attempt by Tresckow to put a bomb on Hitler's plane, disguised as a bottle of brandy, rather than the July 1944 one that succeeded.

It was important to the plot that Hitler was a military genius, which would have been impossible to sustain if he was still alive in July 1944. Stalingrad was explained away by Hitler for once listening to bad advice from his generals rather than following his instincts.

The author might have been Colin Forbes: certainly somebody of his ilk.
