I've been lurking here for years but finally took the plunge recently and joined. I'm very much going to be a 'taker' rather than a 'giver'. Even so, I can still contribute occasionally in my specialist field (historical tabletop wargaming).

You have already given mate so part of the forum.
It does not matter how little of often people post its good to have a varied mix of characters.

The German know-it-all mentality leaves me no choice but to post more than to ask. And of course my unique contributions to the common good must be preserved for posterity.

However, I confess unreservedly that many years ago I once deleted all my posts from a (now defunct) forum: there, at some point, OP Barbarossa was all too unabashedly portrayed as an imperative pre-emptive strike or - my very personal "favourite" - Heydrich as a misunderstood benefactor of the Czechs: Simply signing off was not enough for me...

Although I've never noticed the kind of "Hit & Run Researchers" that you describe, I did have a guy last year who joined the forum just to say he had some information for me.

According to his "last seen" data, he never came back.

Don't know whether to be concerned or annoyed (...although it would seem like a lot of trouble to go to for a practical joke!)

Here he comes again the perpetual editor. My typing is erratic and often poor.
I don't seriously regard myself as a MEMBER as I don't think I have a broad enough knowledge. I observe from a distance and by the time I find the answers to people's enquiries someone gets in before me. I then find myself INTERRUPTING someone's thread. Some don't bother, others ignore me or comment as such. I never considered a thread to be a complete storyline.
My solution is to go away for a while and come back with what I consider to be an interesting thread of my own.
This doesn't always work, lately I have struggled to keep up, so am going away to give my brain a rest and leave it to the regular responders.
Its summer time (really?) and I now have a car again to go out and meet people (where ever they are) in theory.

    CATCH THAT TIGER!

I mean, no drive-by researcher can beat that.

    You're obsessed!

    It is quite funny, though
    Or completely unfunny.
    Or something.

That diary needs covering by a grown up.
    ...

    ...
Maybe I'm a tad obsessed too.
    ...
    Bugger.

If being obsessed about the CATCH THAT TIGER! discussion is wrong, I don't want to be right.

The types I detest are those who come seeking the fruits of (often lengthy) research from obliging souls such as us, for one reason and one reason only. To verify and make profit from something they have no other intent toward except sell. Job done, they disappear into the ether and count the additional profit they have eked from us.

There is another type. People who have an agenda then start a thread with a 'controversial' claim usually backed by a wall of text that can be hard to decipher/validate but rarely fully supports the initial claim. These posters know this and what they are doing (successfully most of the time) is starting an argument where they modify their initial claim to get around the expected counter-arguments that arise. In effect they are getting others to do their research and then take over that research and claim it as their own as they post a modified version of the initial argument. By moving on to a new 'modified' argument to work around the criticism they eventually end up (by removing all obvious errors of fact/ false claims) with a case that is difficult to refute. It is a growing problem.
