ramacal: How did you get the CWGC entry with a date of 24th June?

The actual CWGC date I have is 20th, not 24th!

    006 BARTLETT TH 867420 240 BTY, 77 HAA REGT 20/06/1944 ROYAL ARTILLERY

Geoff's entry comes up as the 20th June, but when you click the link and the CWGC entry comes up, it states the date of death is the 24th June.

    See link to this casualty

Hi Kevin and Ramacal. Thanks for helping. I also got the date of death from the cwgc site as 24th june 44 but google searching singapore cemetary they have 20th june 44. I also got two sinking dates for the tamahoko maru of the same dates, don't know if this is just a coincidence.Ramacal the list shows all with the same date of death, does this mean they were all on the same ship and can I find out somewhere?

    Pamela

You can only assume they all perished under the same circumstances. That's all it is, an assumption. I don't know where to look, but I'll contact someone I correspond with regularly who has done a lot of research about Far East POW's and experienced the same problems tracking down casualties.

    Regards - Rob

CWGC have amended these dates sometime in the last 15 months. Never trust the data in Geoff's Search Engine it cannot be 100% accurate, it says so on the tin! Always check the CWGC record.

thanks again everyone, it's not easy doing this research stuff. Ramacal thanks for the link re photo of memorial will get one of those. Will get back to you about kew, thanks for the offer of checking. It looks like a nightmare checking there, you need all the correct box numbers and I am still waiting on my cousin to get his date of birth. I have come across a couple of items where he is listed as henry(his second name) but I know its him because its his gnr no. Interestingly, yesterday I went to the library to read the sparrows by tony paley. There was a list of all the casualties of the 77haa regiment. Tom was mentioned as henry I reckon it was him, no gnr no shown but listed as 240 bty from cardiff died 20th june(not 24) at sea. I was hoping it would give me what ship.

Slowly learning my way around this site. Some very interesting articles and information. Thanks again everyone for helping and the links. I have spoken to the aust war memorial and asked for a quote on getting copies of info on the tamahoko maru, its possible he was on this ship. Tom died before I was born but hopefully I can piece together his story for the rest of the family. We must never forget the sacrifices they all made.

Hi everyone, I have been searching the archives site at kew, trying to sort out what I need to look up for my research If ever I get there and one of the items I thought I might need was wo 392 BRITISH PRISONERS OF WAR IN JAPAN OR JAPANESE OCCUPIED TERRITORY WORLD WAR TWO. In my case for Tom Bartlett I think I need wo 392/23 It appears this one is now AVAILABLE ONLINE for free. I managed to download it but my computer couldn't read it so will have to get my son to help me here but thought I would let you know it looks like it's available online if anyone needs it. The other boxes I thought I might need I couldn't seem to get wo 345 wo304 wo367

WO 392/23 is a rather large PDF file (145MB) . I've attached a relevant bit here - a puzzle here too.

    JA is abbreviation for Java.

EDIT WO345, 304 and 367 are large box files, not available as Documents Online.

Looks like released. Perhaps an error?

I'll look to see if there is anything more in the file, but it just looks like a list of names as shown here. If you have a PDF reader on your PC, it should load for viewing if you click the file. It is an unusually big file though.

If your son manages to open the file, it is on page 140

:)thanks geoff, my computer did seem to have downloaded it but it said it couldn't read it and all I got was the first page showing the archives logo then all blank pages. Will get my son to help, he's away for a while. Appreciate your help in checking for me.

I've checked half a dozen more from Kevin's list, names beginning with B. (the file is A-D). They have dates 24.6.44 and 'Missing On Board Ship' and most have 'Dead' underneath this in pencil.

thanks geoff, I am slowly getting bits of information to put together Toms story. Funny it says missing on ship you would have thought they would have said lost at sea or something. I am still missing any info on him between 8th march 42 and 24th June 44 might try the international red cross. I checked as many pow camp lists as I could find online but couldn't find a mention of him anywhere. Ramacal is checking with someone about far east pows maybe something will come up there. thanks again:)

Looks like the camp he was held at was at Java.
WO345 is prisoner index cards from the east, but only contains about 50,000, so not all POWs are here.
    WO367 is internees at Singapore.

Geoff so do you mean there may be something in wo345 and not wo367? Do you know of any other boxes that may have something in them?

I would have thought WO345 most likely of the two. However it is an incomplete record as I believe there were many more than 50,000 prisoners. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment.

Thanks again heaps everyone for all your help. Ramacal I have contacted Tony for a photo of Toms memorial and I got a reply with a photo which was great. You said that you had a contact who is researching far east pows, do you think he might know of any info for me. I have searched everywhere online including the cofepow and fepow sites which has lot of information including some interesting reading on the java gunners which mentions Toms bty and regiment. Also does anyone know of any books I can read which might have some info on Toms bty and regiment. I am reading The Sparrows at the moment by Tony Paley.

    Hi Pamela

I thought the Regiment my contact was researching might have had men on the same vessel that was sunk, but it did not. I struck out on that line of enquiry.

ok, thanks very much for trying. If you know of anywhere else I can check for prisoner of war records can you let me know. I think the international red cross is my next option, and getting his service record. I have searched the mansell site and lots of other places but just can't find Tom mentioned anywhere. I've got a list of box numbers at kew that may have some info in them also.
