Hi new member here need help My father passed away ten years ago. He had brother killed in ww2 All we new was that he was killed on prisoner of war ship. I found letter to my father from his brother and I am hoping to find out what happened to him. letter dated tuesday jan 13th. I checked old calendars I think the only time jan 13 fell on tuesday between 1939 and 1945 was in 1942 details Thomas Henry Bartlett No 867420 240 bty 77 W.H.AA.RA cwgc shows date death 24th june44 singapore cemetary site shows date death 20th June44 cofepow shows captured8th march42 It appears he may have been part of java gunners? I haven't been able to find him on prisoner of war lists online or hellship honour rolls. The only thing I found which probably coincidence is two sinking dates for tamahoko maru of 20june44 and 24june 44 the same two dates of death for tom Would love know where and what happened to him between 42 and 44 also what ship he was on. I hope this makes sense and someone can help, thanks
Hi Pamela FOund this - Orders of Battle - 77 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA [British Commonwealth] Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA does not say much also this on this forum - http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/research-material/25024-history-royal-artillery-regt-far-east-theatre-1941-46-farndale.html scroll down a bit to find some mention and you probably have this - COFEPOW - South East Asia Under Japanese Occupation - Java Gunners someone more knowledgable will help so welcome and regards Robert
Hi Pamela You might be interested in this also - The War Graves Photographic Project and 77haa and RA 1939-45 77 HAA Rgt These records are at AWM - Australian War Memorial - Information sheets but you have to go there - they are not online - or amybe you can look the record up and ask for a quote? regards Robert
Hello Pamela, Welcome to the forum. Not sure if this helps but the following POW ship was lost on 24 June 1944..... TAMAHOKO MARU Part of a convoy sailing towards Japan with 772 Australian, British and American prisoners of war on board. With the lights of Japan in sight, one of the ships in the convoy, exploded after being torpedoed by the US submarine USS Tang. Nearby, the Tamahoko Maru was almost blown apart and water poured in through a gaping hole in her side. On top of the main hatch cover 80 men were sleeping. Not one of them survived. As the Tamahoko (6,780 tons) settled in the water, hundreds of prisoners jumped into the sea and soon a Japanese whale-chaser appeared and started picking up survivors. The final count was that 560 POWs had died. Of the 267 Australians on board only 72 survived. Fifteen US soldiers and sailors were killed as well as thirteen merchant seamen rescued from the sunk freighter American Leader. Next day, 212 survivors of the Tamahoko Maru were brought into the harbour at Nagasaki to spend the rest of the war in the POW camp, Fukuoka 13.
thanks everyone for your welcomes, also information and links. I will check them all out. I have only seen the cofepow site about Java, very interesting, this fits in with his capture date of 8th march 42. I would like to find out what happened to him after capture between march 42 and his date of death in 44 and what ship he was on. The Tamahoko Maru fits in with his date of death but I can't find a list of who died on this one.
Pamela, 77 HAA Rgt were in convoy WS14 heading for the middle east when, at the end of December 1941, they were diverted to Singapore. The convoy had just arrived when they were ordered to re-deploy to Batavia leaving on the 30th January 1942. They arrived at Batavia on the 4th February and were attacked by enemy aircraft as they were unloading. Once they had unloaded they were deployed around the harbour. 77th were then deployed on the 7th Feb to the naval base at Sourabaya less 239 Bty at Batavia. On the 1st March HQ 77 HAA with 240 & 241 Btys were moved from Sourabaya, which was now under heavy attack, to Tjilatjap, losing a Troop as they did so. Sorry that's all I have. They were presumably captured when the garrison surrendered.
Hi Robert, the Aust war memorial information sheets look interesting, do you know if the lists show british casualties as well as Australian. Tom was welsh. I know there is also information at Kew in the uk but will have to win the lotto to go there to have a look, I can't get them online. Also, does anyone know if it's worthwhile checking the international red cross for information on camps he might have been in. I have a cousin in the uk who is trying to get Toms official date of birth and as I am one of the next of kins I think they will check for me. thanks Pam
Hi Pamela & welcome. It would appear that 240 Battery had 125 men who died during the period of captivity and some even afterwards as a result of their time in captivity. The Regiment as a whole lost nearly half of it's men whilst in captivity. You mention there is information at Kew. Can you tell me what it is as I may be able to do a look up for you in the not too distant future. Regards - Rob
CWGC Kranji - Singapore Memorial: pics of c25,000 names now available. Whilst at CWGC Kranji in Singapore, I managed to photograph all the names - c25,000 - on the Singapore Memorial* (*sometimes known as the Kranji Memorial). These are now available - FREE - to family/friends/researchers etc. note: As there are 13 very large pillars supporting 472 columns which, in turn, are displaying c25,000 names, you MUST provide me with the correct column number, and you can do this by visiting the CWGC website for those particular details. For multiple requests, please contact me first to discuss your requirements. My contact details; nt872b(at)hotmail.com Patience please....and allow c4 weeks before hearing from me....Thank you. ramacal: How did you get the CWGC entry with a date of 24th June? The actual CWGC date I have is 20th, not 24th! These are Geoff's listing for deaths on 20/05/1944 on Singapore Memorial, so likely to be the 93 UK casualties from the convoy. 001 ALLSOPP WH 1700401 89 BTY, 35 LT AA REGT 20/06/1944 ROYAL ARTILLERY 002 AVONS JM 2363023 - Hi Kevin and Ramacal. Thanks for helping. I also got the date of death from the cwgc site as 24th june 44 but google searching singapore cemetary they have 20th june 44. I also got two sinking dates for the tamahoko maru of the same dates, don't know if this is just a coincidence.Ramacal the list shows all with the same date of death, does this mean they were all on the same ship and can I find out somewhere?
