Wow what a view, from you veranda I trust. It might seem a lot of effort but it really is worth it. You can research so much more once you have them. I did the same for my Father the journey has not finished yet, it does become addictive once you start though David
Couple of miles up the road David......but the whole area is like that. Very different to industrial South Wales. This search will be in limbo for a while till I get my father's records back, but I'm going to start a different one to track my late father in law......who also saw active service in Europe.
South Wales (and the North) does have some fantastic scenery, have had some fabulous holidays in Wales. Hope you keep us updated, would interested in what you discover David
Can't you send him the completed forms, he can then add the cheque and send on to the records office. Might save a journey up the goat track
One thing that still puzzles me is why I was always told he was a POW in CZ......yet the records show DE? Does anybody know if any CZ camps relocated their prisoners to Stalag IV-B?
Why did you send cheque ? It should have been free for her. My Mum got my Dad's postwar RAF records for free. I've got them now as I was the one that asked.
Long story Owen, but in the end it was just easier for me to obtain his records myself. Sadly mum passed away 8/12/14. After a long battle with dementia.
Hi, You would need to start another topic with a request for a free Liberation Questionnaire look up at Kew or send member Nick Fenton a PM asking him to look it up for you for a fee. I have my dad´s questionnaire and also copies of his Red Cross papers from Switzerland. You need to keep an eye on the Red Cross website as they are part way through a digitisation process to make their WW2 papers searchable on the internet and downloadable for free. At the end of the war the British Army took possession of the German central POW registry index cards. It is held in the National Archives. I saw mention on another thread about a freedom of information request process where National Archives will let interested parties have copies of the index card but cant remember the thread. Im hoping another member may remember and attach a link You should make a freedom of information request asking for a copy of the index card. It will show which camps he was held in and date of capture etc, I am abroad at the moment not too far away from Granada - so cant attach a copy of my Dads index card. Good Luck Steve Y
Pete, glad your friend is helping you out with the cheque. Be sure to ask MOD for your Dads full service record. It can make a difference to the amount they disclose. I didn't know that before I applied for my Dads record, but when I applied for it, I hadn't discovered WW2talk and all the great tips and guidance.
Thanks for that information guys.....much appreciated! I'd never have got to the position I am now without all the help and advice that I've had here!
I have to say that this must be the longest 'User Introduction' I have seen from my time as a member on this site. TD
I checked yesterday at Kew for a Liberation report under T Jones and there wasn't one fitting the details posted. There was a near miss for a guy captured at Arnhem in the Para's but his service number was about 200 out so they probably joined up together ish.
