Wiki suggests that the only Coldstream Guards Battalion which served in Italy was the 3rd Battalion. You may need to build on this, it is a starting point:
    Link: Coldstream Guards - Wikipedia

    Then:
Link: The Coldstream Guards | National Army Museum

There are quite a few threads here on them, accessible via: 3 coldstream guards | WW2Talk

    Hi,

The badge in the beret looks to be CG.

You may find him listed in the CG enlistment registers that are available on findmypast site.

Once you have his service number you will be able to apply to MOD for his service records.

Request records of deceased service personnel

Here is the link to CG WW2 official history. He may be named but it’s unlikely -

The Coldstream Guards, 1920-1946, by Michael Howard and John Sparrow.

It does say (P217) that 3rd CG had 3 weeks rest in August 1944 at Siena and parties of men were able to visit Rome.

I can’t see any mention if 2nd CG having leave in Rome but that’s not to say men didn’t pass through there - perhaps on convalescent leave or similar.

You could always try the 14 day free trial option. As long as you cancel by day 13 it costs you nothing.

I guess the date of birth 26/12/11 is the best way to confirm if its him if you have anything about that shows his birthday, Boxing Day makes it one that should be memorable

Sorry the 2nd scan isn't brilliantly clear, I had to resize it to get it uploaded

Are you expecting more from forum members?

There is very limited information available on the internet for WW2 British service personnel and most of what is available is behind a paywall - mainly FMP for CG.

Stuart has given you an army service number and extract from the enlistment book via his personal FMP subscription. You ought to be able to confirm much - if not all - of the information provided from family members or your own knowledge/research. There doesn’t appear to be another Stephen Rowan in the CG records.

The only way forward to discover more information is in your hands. If you are satisfied it is “your” Stephen Rowan then you need to apply to U.K. MOD for a copy of his service records.

    Steve

    EDIT TO ADD

It may be relevant to note - in the context of the picture taken in St Peter’s Square, Rome - that his religion on enlistment is recorded as Roman Catholic
