Hello I have just received my late grandfathers service records, I think I have worked most of it ( am serving so under stand most of the abbreviations!) out but im a bit lost on some parts. He joined the 5th Devons and then transferred to 86 A/T reg ( BN re-role?) Granted S.P.P with effect from 02/09/42. then a part 2 order ser number, cant read the writing but it ends with by RW? Nov 1943:Posted No1 infantry training centre ( where was it located?) transferred to Essex regiment. 16/05/44 posted 6bn IRTD X(4)? British Norh africa force. 16/07/44 posted to 1 CRU? Italy. 23/07/44 posted 1/4 Essex. 02/10/44 attended (some thing cant read it) at No1 IRTD with the comment Result-Good? 14/12/45 medically examined Cat A1? 18/02/46 Class A release? 20/02/46 posted to Y List E? Any help with the above would be fantastic. The other thing that is confusing me is his papers say he was a butcher before enlisting, then completed a butchers course at Bullford in 1941. But his discharge papers say he was shoemaker? Thanks in advance Jon
Hello and welcome. Is there any chance you could scan them and post them here? There are a lot of forum members who will be able to decipher them into plain English! Lesley
Jon, You may be pretty disappointed to find out the list of initials. Training and joining Reinforcement Units cover a few of them. Some rough headlines: The core of your grandfather's active service seems to fall under the period 23th July 1944 to 20th Feb 1946 when it appears that he was serving with 1/4 Essex. This battalion had been with 5th Indian Brigade within 4th Indian Division at Cassino and had been badly mauled (an understatement) in Mar 1944, so it looks like he came as a reinforcement to that much depleted battalion. 1/4 Essex left the 5th Indian Brigade in August 1944 for rest and refitting, returning to the brigade in Nov 1944. 4th Indian Division were then posted to Greece in Dec 1944. Hope the experts can now properly help you. best
Hi Jon. 1/4 Essex were indeed in Greece from 9th December 1944. If you PM me your email address I will send you a copy of "Operations of British Troops in the Insurrection in Greece - December 1944—January 1945". That covers most of what 1/4 Essex were up to. Regards Gus
Hi I need some help with these please. I believe from help from a previous post that he was was a bcr? Would he have been entitled to the Italy star? many thanks in advance Jon
I've merged new thread with your earlier one to avoid duplication of effort. Looks like we qualitied for Italy Star to me. What's a ''bcr'' you mention?
