Hi all, I have another family members service records to decipher, Frank Hill, 4133516. A summary of his service is: Joined Cheshires 17/10/40 Transferred to 4th Northumberland Fusliers 10/05/41 4th NF were re-designated 50th Bn. Recce Corps, so the entry has been corrected to reflect the re-badge and is dated 11/05/41 North Africa, POW Gazala/Knightsbridge 06/06/42 POW Italy, escaped on the capitulation of Italy, seems to have remained free until October 1944. It is the early part of his service that has a couple of acronyms that I need help with. Same day as being enlisted, 17/10/40, posted to MGTC, Machine Gun Training Centre. So basic infantry training and MG training rolled into 1, would that be at Bisley MGTC, or the Cheshires Depot, I'm guessing the latter, but why the MGTC designation? The other abbreviation is No 1 MGHB - is that Machine Gun Heavy Battalion? being posted there on 21 March 1941. Does anyone know where that unit was based, and the higher formation? Thanks for any assistance. Regards, Steve
1 MGHB = 1 Machine Gun Holding Battalion. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details?Uri=C790822 send a PM to ask Richard Fisher for more info http://ww2talk.com/forums/user/6450-richard-fisher/ This is his excellent website. http://www.vickersmachinegun.org.uk/ MGTC explained here. http://www.vickersmachinegun.org.uk/training-mgtc.htm
