Please I'm looking for some help interpreting my grandfather’s service records with certain parts his records that I can’t understand or know, it would be very much appricated.
My grandfather was called up in 1939 in to the Territorial Army. He went into the Royal Engineers as a Sapper and was only in there for 264 days. I highlighted the areas that I can’t understand or read and hoping someone might know if they recognise anything highlighted in red.

Should maybe look for a Royal Engineers thread and repost. Wish I could help but still a novice myself. Good luck.

    Hi and welcome

THe handwriting is not great but here is what I can work out-
? & embodied (Looking at the top line it looks like armed - see armed forces in brackets - same wrtiting?? but I could be wrong)

Mustered from Normal Rates (as for the line above)
to ? E III with effect from
(amend in future Lt or Pt II to come)

the little bit on the side says Depot Company 6 TB

as for what it means, well
embodied means he joined and was taken into the RE as Sapper on 15/3/40
The other must be something to do with pay rates??

    regards

    Robert

    Thanks for the posts!

The hand writing is not very good at all, i think your right. with the word embodied i could see that now. i think it might say ''Arrived ACP embodied'' in my abbrieviations Sheet ACP mean Army Composite Platoon,

My grandfather was called up under the National Service 1939 on his service records its states he was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers by 5/03/1940 posted to No. 6 TBRE (Territorial Branch of the Royal Engineers)

His Previous profession before and once he got out of the was a farmer.

He served 256 Days in the Army and waas discharged on 3.12.1940 in consequence of DISCHARGED Para390 (paragraph 390) xvi (16) (XVI or X6 - Missing , Possibly Prisoner of War). "ceasing to fulfil Army physical Requirement.

As i'm new to this forum and i have very little details of my grandfather, which he died a few years after he discharged.

I was wondering what kind of training would he have recieved, where and how long for in Royal Engineer in Territorial Army?

What is the meaning '''Mustered Normal Rations'

If anyone could help clear some question it would be very much appriciated.

TBRE is actually Training Battalion, RE. I believe this is where standard recruit training was carried out, before they moved on to trade training. No. 6 Training Battalion was based at Elgin, having been formed in Oct 1939 with the Corps' war expansion.

Merged threads as they both on same topic, multipal threads leads to confusion & duplication of effort.

As Idler says TBRE is Training Battalion Royal Enginners.

I though Farmers were exempt from being called up, unless they volunteered to do so.

    For what it's worth:

    'Arrived and Embodied'

    'Mustered from N.R.
    to Raise E III wef
    (Amend in future
    Pt II to come)'

I appricate the response. Its helped me out alot.

I thought farmers were exempt myself but he was a farm servant from certain certificates that we have, its a bit of a grey area unfortunetly we dont know much about his life as he died at a early age after he discharged.
