.... or William ERNEST Perry? Might be good to be clear when you get in touch with the medal office or apply for records?

Yes please excuse me it is William Ernest Perry - I am recovering from awful covid over last 6 weeks and noticing I am somewhat confused at times plus have typed up so many family names with Ernest or Edward in the middle - apologies. Problem too I have seen both middle names for him. It is Ernest according to birth details.

I’ve screwed my poor old eyes as best I can Owen and if it is indeed an unofficial medal, then I’m plumping for the Malta option of the two suggestions. The suspender bar on the Malta, for one, looks much more similar and straightforward than the more ornate Submarine Service version. I also reckon that the laurel and crown side of the Malta medal may well be what we can see in Alison’s photo?

I had wondered if the one next to it was the Mercantile Marine medal, but the central white stripe looks too wide. Besides, not sure that medal would make any sense really, would it.

Alison, have you contacted the person who put the photo on Ancestry to try and get a copy of the original, or at least a better scan?

Yes we have been in touch previously when she wanted info from me. Unfortunately no response since but have also tried the other tree. One is mine too. My husbands parents were in ww2 and he was born in 1965 so there are no relatives around who can help us now.

    Surely that's the War Medal?

That would definitely make much more sense than my guess Tim, yes. The fading made the left side look a tad green to me, hence my first thought.

Logic has the 2nd last one as War medal (ribbon doesn't look like it but could just be the image) and the suggestion of Malta medal for tee last one seems a good shout

That last medal may be the Malta Medal - see Owen’s post #16 in this thread. It looks very much a contender.

    Welcome, by the way.

    From my reading: L-R

    1939-1945 Star,
Atlantic Star (which may have the clasp "France and Germany" for service on or after 6 June 1944)
    Africa Star
    Italy Star
    War Medal 1939-45
Malta GC 50th Anniversary Medal - definitely. (Partner's late father received one for convoy duty)

I keep trying to get a better copy of the photo but the lady who has it just doesn’t send it when she says she will. Such a shame but I intend to send for his record soon.
