    Hello all,

I wonder if any one of our members out there has a copy of an old newspaper from 1944? I am looking for a copy of the June 9th 1944 edition of the Daily Express. Apparently there was a photo of several Glider Pilots who had just returned from Normandy and a friend of mine is amongst them. He doesn't have a decent copy of the photo and I'd love to be able to get a copy and have it framed for him as a XMas present. I have tried the various "old newspaper" websites but the version of the Express that they all have doesn't seem to have the photo I'm looking for??

    All the best..........:)

It's not the Chatterton welcoming back D Day GPs one, is it? The one that's in the GPR History. Names are Lawrence, Howard, Guthrie, Shooter (Shorter?), Boyle, Pearson

    Hi Steve,

No, I know the one you mean mate and it's not that one. My mate, Larry, has a very poor 'copy of a copy of a copy' and it just shows four or five GP's standing around carrying their weapons.
Larry told me that when he returned from Normandy, him and a few other GP's were in a lorry being taken to some barracks somewhere and the lorry stopped for a 'pee' break. All the lads got out and there just happened to be a photographer from a newspaper there who prooceeded to take a few snapshots. One of the pictures subsequently ended up in the Daily Express for the 9th June!
As I've said, I have contacted the Express archive people and they have shown me the paper for that day (apparently all newspapers during wartime were only 4 pages long due to paper shortages!). The thing is, Larry's picture is not there!! I have quizzed them over this and all they can think of was perhaps it was an early edition that Larry saw or maybe a Scottish verison of the paper as sometimes these were different!

PS My friends name is Lawrence "Larry" Goldthorpe 4546883 (At Arnhem he was part of No.2 Wing, 'E' Squadron, No.12 Flight)

Paul, I may be talking to the converted, but have you ever read an excellent book called The Glider Gang by Milton Dank ( Cassell - 1977)? There are a couple of photos of glider pilots in it and in fact the book itself might be a good present if you could find a copy!

Paul ... I've recently found a copy of the book called 'The Glider Gang' written by Milton Dank, as my Dad is on the front cover, together with a photograph inside.

Had a good look for your photograph but it's not in there. However, if anybody is after copy of this book ... clarebooks@btinternet.com

The British Library is another good source re. old copies of newspapers.

    Best of luck,
    Lindsay

    Hi Lindsay,

Thanks very much for the info about the books contents. Which one of the two GP's on the front is your Dad? I assume that the pic on the book is taken from the same one as your avatar. Would it be possible to post a full size version?

All the best and thanks again for taking the time to look for my mates photo............... :)

    Hello again Paul,

Dad is indeed the Glider Pilot on the left ... my avatar showing the four Glider Pilots standing under the wing of a Horsa Glider are:

    Dad : Lt. J. F. Hubble
    S/Sgt. B. L. Morgan
    S/Sgt. J. R. Crone
    Sgt. R. Biagott

This photograph has popped in several other publications ... only wish RAF 296 Squadron x B Squadron, 1 Wing GPR, Glider Raid Reports would do the same!

    Best wishes,
    Lindsay

I wonder if any of our GP experts know if there is a website or email address for "The Eagle" magazine and whether or not they have an 'archive' of pics?

    Hi Paul,

A further photograph for you of Dad with his mates ... he's "sporting a lesser moustache" in this photograph!

    A%20Flight%201945[1].jpg .jpg]

Records held at the NA confirm that Dad took part in Operation Varsity, the Rhine Crossings, 24.03.45., and was first up in the serial lift that left from Earls Colne Airfield x RAF 296 Squadron x B Squadron, 1 Wing GPR.
Dad's Halifax Tug Pilot was RAF 296 Squadron Leader T. C. Musgrave.

The "scenario" surrounding this serial lift and my enquiry, together with 'extracts' from letters that Dad wrote before, during and after Operation Varsity, can be seen under my initial enquiry. :poppy:

    I'll keep searching ..... !

Paul ... re. The Eagle magazine ...

No e-mail available for back copies but the editor is :-

Mr. David Brook, (active GPR Veteran)
    Birds Hill,
    Gt. Bealings,
    Woodbridge,
    Suffolk, IP13 6NR

I feel sure he would be able to help you.

The Museum of Army Flying hold complete sets, as do the Airborne Forces Museum at Duxford.

The photograph of the "famous four" appeared on the front page of the August 2009 edition of The Eagle!
