Welcome to ww2talk ... What a dashing looking chap your uncle looks and in deed ... ironed out a few wrinkles for you. Well done with the photoo Drumaneen! Can you do wonders with cheeks and chins?
51Highland, that headgear seems familiar, here's my old fella with a chap possibly wearing such headgear, perhaps in the s'Hertogenbosch area.

Drumaneen, that's brilliant, can you do this one? It's the only picture I have of my grandparents on my dads side, snif. Very much appreciated, a couple of cyber ciders in the pipe for you.

More news in for me, my old fella was apparently in 331 Bty RA, stationed in Portadown, Co. Armagh at some point prior to joining the 53rd Recce. I know he volunteered in 1939 but didn't know who he was with before the Recce. He was a Mechanical Transport Driver. I think he used to train drivers. Seems he was in hospital with tonsilitis when he was befriended by some Recce men. Also got his army number, 943655. R.L.Hughes
This does make sense the 53rd Reconnaissance was created(?) in January 1941 in Malone Road in Belfast before moving to Ballykinler. The main military hospital in NI would have been Musgrave Park in Belfast. I presume he would have volunteered and been posted to the nearest Recce Regt.
That sounds good. He was found all solemn playing the piano in the Hospital by Iuan Morgan, who would become his great lifelong friend. Iuan Morgan we think was a corporal. He told my dad to stay miserable or come and join him and his pals for a laugh. He went and the rest was history, joined the recce, got shelled and shot at alot!
Hello Trpr and welcome to the forums. Your dad shot down a stuka eh? Thats pretty good shooting! Hope you enjoy the forums!
My dad shot a few things, but never a Stuka. He did have his eyebrows blown off by a Tiger tank though. He also done whoopsies in his trousers at same time. My Uncle bagged the Stuka from the back of a truck with a Bren. Not sure where, possibly out in the desert, but equally possible NW Europe.
