First of all my Name is Geoff and I am trying to find information about my late father in law, he joined The Loyal Regiment in December 1942, but we do not have any information except for his Army Number, we have a letter that states he was a POW in Stalag VIII-C in November 1944 and that the Red Army took him to Odessa April 1945, we also have Eddie's POW number, if anyone could let me know how to go about getting information with whom Eddie served with and what battle he was in would be brilliant. Cheers
I've edited title & moved thread to a different part of the forum. As it was a bit more in depth than a simple 'hello forum'' thread. As Drew says, sending off to MOD for Service Records is the best advice. PS Welcome to the forum.
Hi Geoff and welcome to the forum. I would apply for a copy of his service records first Cheers Andy Sorry to sound ignorant Andy but where would we get his Service Records from? Many thanks.
Geoff. If you discover that he was in 1 Loyals, come back to me. Regards FdeP If he served with the 1st Loyals I will get back to you. Cheers
Hi Geoff-Owen's given you a link to applying for his records. Give us a shout if you struggle but it's quite easy, I've applied for 3 sets of records. There can be a wait of upto 12 months but it's worth the wait and cost. Good luck Andy
Also take a look at this very helpful thread that jacksun made for those new to research. WW2 Soldier Research - Tips and Links for New Researchers http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone-military-genealogy/47584-ww2-soldier-research-tips-links-new-researchers.html
Geoff. The Loyals only had two infantry Battalions - the three Reserve Battalions were quickly converted into Recce Regts or Artillery. 1 Loyals served with 2 Infantry Brigade and fought at Anzio as part of 1 Infantry Division. 2 Loyals were in the Far East and were lost at Singapore. 2 Loyals were reformed in 1942 and went to Italy with 10 Indian Division very late in the war. My hunch is that your father was in 1 Loyals at Anzio and was captured there. Regards FdeP
he joined The Loyal Regiment in December 1942, and could have been posted to any other regiment soon after. Doesnt mean he was with Loyals when captured.
Hi Geoff, can you post his full name, soldier number and POW number. The info may help people to find info on him for you. Cheers, Wayne
POW info, not much. Stalag VIII-C is the last camp he was in. First Name: E. Last Name: Owen Rank: Private Regt / Unit: Loyal Regiment Soldier Number: 14395869 Pow: Yes POW Number: 86676 Camp: Stalag VIII-C Camp Location: Konin Zaganski, Poland Take a look at the link in my signature for info on ordering service records, Red Cross records, and his liberation report. Liberation report, if he did one will give info on other camps he was in, injuries and other details if he took the time to fill it out fully. Liberation reports can be had in a week or two, service records and Red Cross records take ~12 months. Wayne
Hi, I see this is a really old post, but got my attention as similar to a guy I'm researching. Not sure if you got the records, but I have the diaries for 1944. My man also went on Battle of Anzio, and was captured shortly afterwards. His records gave me exact dates he was taken as POW and I was able to cross reference to some entries in the war diaries, which added some 'meat'. Sad story, but at least we know it.
Frank, He's posted more POW info on this thread. He was captured post Anzio breakout late August 1944. Steve Y Help with history of service
