    Hallo everybody,

I am a brand new member from Germany and looking for material and British veterans with a connetion to the island Heligoland. The period I am interested in reaches from April 1945 (big bombing raid on April 18, 153 Squadron) till 1951 - end of the post-war training raids against Heligoland.

I am also looking for material/information/veterans with connection to the "Big Bang" 18 April 1947 when the submarine-bunkers and fortifications on the island were destroyed. The preparation of the Big Bang took months and I am also looking for veterans who helped to prepare it.

<O:p</O:pDoes anybody have an idea how to find what I am looking for?

    Hi Spidge,

thank you very much. Hopefully I will have luck. The history of Heligoland is amazing and on the German side it was always told from a German point of view.
I really would like to get an better idea of the British point of view. Actually I am planning to make a TV documentary about this subject.

    Hi Owen,

thank you very much for your warm welcome. I don't know how many Germans are member of WWIItalk. But I think that it is very important to talk about this war and to think about it together, across the old frontiers. Two years ago I made with a British collegue and friend of mine, Ian Lilley, a tv-documentary about the battle of Monte Cassino and it was absolutely great to work together on such a subject. That was for me the point were I understood that it is much more interesting to think about this war together and to know what people from other countries do think than to stay in one's own small cultural circle and to hear ever and ever again the repetitions of what you thought before.

    Thanks again and best
    Knut
