Very sad story, but thanks for posting it. According to Geoff's Search Engine the CWGC lists 146 service personnel killed on the 2nd May 1945.
Thanks Mike for the update. It is very sad. And war is crazy. Even more when you are holding all the original handwritings.
Any chance you can post the information, or a summary of it directly to this site, please? Providing a link to another website that some of us are unable to access means we are unable to read and possibly comment upon. Could you at least share the soldier's name and unit on this site by any chance? Thanks very much.
The the name is Alastair Hardy member of the HLI. I don't understand why people can see this forum and not be able to see my website?
The the name is Alastair Hardy member of the HLI. I don't understand why people can see this forum and not be able to see my website? Thanks for the name. I have now been able to access this link about Private 14246910, Alastair Hardy (written by Fred): War Diary - Campaign in Europe -10 Highland Light Infantry Still no luck with access to 'Back to Normandy' - at least without being required to 'Join a Group' or 'Sign In'. If Pte Hardy was killed by a sniper on 2 May 1945 (as the above article by Fred states) he should be commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission? I was unable to trace his details on the CWGC website by the spelling of the surname Hardy. However, I have found his name spelt as HARDIE (like the former British politician James Keir HARDIE). Here is his CWGC citation: Name: HARDIE, ALASTAIR CARNEGIE Rank: Private Service No: 14246910 Date of Death: 02/05/1945 Age: 21 Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment), 10th Bn. Grave Reference: 4A. O. 13. Cemetery: HAMBURG CEMETERY Additional Information: Son of Harry Davidson Hardie and Isabella Carnegie Hardie, of Kirriemuir, Angus. ++++++++++++++++++
I sorry that I quoted his name out of my memory. It is Hardie. Correct! The story on the HLI website was also written by me from the afterbattle book of the HLI. The link here works OK. Please try to access Back to Normandy by Back to Normandy | Building the story of D-Day In the menu you see News & Facts From there you wil see a new menu. Among that a new item "war diaries" Then the article He nearly made it About the CWGC citation. Hardie was buried close to the place were he was killed. Because of the Iron Curtain he was moved to Hamburg just in time.
One problem that can cause the access to Back to Normandy is the cookie pop-up. When you don't agree with this pop-up you are not allowed to use the website. It is not my idea but new legislation for website
