    BEJA WAR CEMETERY
    • Country: Tunisia
    • Locality: unspecified
    • Visiting Information: It should be noted that this is a terraced cemetery with a number of steps which makes wheelchair access very difficult. The gates to the cemetery are not locked, so it is possible to visit the cemetery at all times, including Saturdays and Sundays. However, the register and visitors' book will not be available outside working hours, as they are kept locked in the gardeners' toolshed.     • Location Information: Beja is a market town approximately 100 kilometres west of Tunis. Beja War Cemetery is located approximately 100 metres north west of the railway station and is next to the derelict Christian civil cemetery. GPS Co-ordinates: N 36° 43' 31", E 09° 11' 18"
    • Historical Information: In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. On 8 November 1942, Commonwealth and American troops made a series of landings in Algeria and Morocco. The Germans responded immediately by sending a force from Sicily to northern Tunisia, which checked the Allied advance east in early December. Beja was just behind the limit of the advance that winter. Beja War Cemetery contains 396 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 87 of them unidentified.

    ENFIDAVILLE WAR CEMETERY

    • Location Information: The town of Enfidaville is approximately 100 kilometres south of Tunis, via the autoroute on the main coast road. The War cemetery is 1 kilometre west of the town centre, on the road to Zaghouan, and its approaches are well signposted. It is immediately south of a small derelict Christian civil cemetery.
    • Historical Information: In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. The campaign began on 8 November 1942, when Commonwealth and American troops made a series of landings in Algeria and Morocco. The Germans responded immediately by sending a force from Sicily to northern Tunisia, which checked the Allied advance east in early December. Meanwhile, in the south, the Axis forces defeated at El Alamein were withdrawing into Tunisia along the coast through Libya, pursued by the Allied Eighth Army. By mid April 1943, the combined Axis force was hemmed into a small corner of north-eastern Tunisia and the Allies were grouped for their final offensive. The Eighth Army attack on the position at Enfidaville on 19 April captured the village, but strong resistance meant no further progress was possible. Attacks further north met with greater success and Tunis fell on 7 May, Bizerta on the 8th. By 11 May, the position at Enfidaville was surrounded at resistance ceased on the following day. Most of those buried at Enfidaville War Cemetery died in the final battles from March to the beginning of May. The cemetery contains 1,551 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 88 of them unidentified.

Meanwhile, in the south, the Axis forces defeated at El Alamein were withdrawing into Tunisia along the coast through Libya, pursued by the Allied Eighth Army.     • Visiting Information: The Medjez-El-Bab Memorial is situated inside Medjez-El-Bab War Cemetery. The cemetery gates are not locked, so it is possible to visit the cemetery at all times, including Saturdays and Sundays. However, the register and visitors' book will not be available outside working hours, as they are kept locked in the gardeners toolshed.     • Historical Information: In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. The campaign began on 8 November 1942, when Commonwealth and American troops made a series of landings in Algeria and Morocco. The Germans responded immediately by sending a force from Sicily to northern Tunisia, which checked the Allied advance east in early December. In the south, the Axis forces defeated at El Alamein withdrew into Tunisia along the coast through Libya, pursued by the Allied Eighth Army. By mid April 1943, the combined Axis force was hemmed into a small corner of north-eastern Tunisia and the Allies were grouped for their final offensive. Medjez-el-Bab was at the limit of the Allied advance in December 1942 and remained on the front line until the decisive Allied advances of April and May 1943. The MEDJEZ-EL-BAB MEMORIAL commemorates almost 2,000 men of the First Army who died during the operations in Algeria and Tunisia between 8 November 1942 and 19 February 1943, and those of the First and Eighth Armies who died in operations in the same areas between 20 February 1943 and 13 May 1943, and who have no known graves. The memorial stands within MEDJEZ-EL-BAB WAR CEMETERY where 2,903 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War are buried or commemorated. 385 of the burials are unidentified. Special memorials commemorate three soldiers buried in Tunis (Borgel) Cemetery and one in Youks-les-Bains Cemetery, whose graves are now lost. The five First World War burials in Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery were brought in from Tunis (Belvedere) Cemetery or in Carthage (Basilica Karita) Cemetery in 1950.

    • Location Information: Medjez-el-Bab is approximately 60 kilometres west of Tunis. The Cemetery is situated 5 kilometres west of Medjez-el-Bab on the road to Le Kef (Route GP5). GPS Co-ordinates: Latitude: 36.626687, Longitude: 9.570444
    • Historical Information: In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. The campaign began on 8 November 1942, when Commonwealth and American troops made a series of landings in Algeria and Morocco. The Germans responded immediately by sending a force from Sicily to northern Tunisia, which checked the Allied advance east in early December. In the south, the Axis forces defeated at El Alamein withdrew into Tunisia along the coast through Libya, pursued by the Allied Eighth Army. By mid April 1943, the combined Axis force was hemmed into a small corner of north-eastern Tunisia and the Allies were grouped for their final offensive. Medjez-el-Bab was at the limit of the Allied advance in December 1942 and remained on the front line until the decisive Allied advances of April and May 1943. There are 2,903 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in MEDJEZ-EL-BAB WAR CEMETERY. 385 of the burials are unidentified. Special memorials commemorate three soldiers buried in Tunis (Borgel) Cemetery and one in Youks-les-Bains Cemetery, whose graves are now lost. Within the cemetery stands the MEDJEZ-EL-BAB MEMORIAL, bearing the names of almost 2,000 men of the First Army who died during the operations in Algeria and Tunisia between 8 November 1942 and 19 February 1943, and those of the First and Eighth Armies who died in operations in the same areas between 20 February 1943 and 13 May 1943, and who have no known graves. The five First World War burials in Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery were brought in from Tunis (Belvedere) Cemetery or in Carthage (Basilica Karita) Cemetery in 1950.

    OUED ZARGA WAR CEMETERY
    • Country: Tunisia
    • Locality: unspecified
    • Visiting Information: There is no register box at this cemetery and therefore the cemetery register and visitors book are only available should a visit coincide with the presence of the part-time cemetery guardian.
    • Location Information: Oued Zarga is approximately 80 kilometres west of Tunis, midway between Medjez El Bab and Beja on the GP6 road. The road leading to the cemetery is approximately 3.3 kilometres past the village of Oued Zarga and is marked by a sign pointing to the left. The track to the cemetery is unmade and steep in sections and access is not suitable for buses. The distance to the cemetery from the main road is approximately 1.1 kilometres. GPS Co-ordinates: N 36° 40' 30", E 09° 24' 54"
    • Historical Information: In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. On 8 November 1942, Commonwealth and American troops made a series of landings in Algeria and Morocco. The Germans responded immediately by sending a force from Sicily to northern Tunisia, which checked the Allied advance east in early December. Oued Zarga was just behind the limit of the advance that winter. Oued Zarga War Cemetery contains 247 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.

    SFAX WAR CEMETERY

    • Visiting Information: The cemetery gates are not locked, so it is possible to visit the cemetery at all times, including Saturdays and Sundays. However, the register and visitors' book will not be available outside working hours, as they are kept locked in the gardeners tool shed.     • Location Information: The town of Sfax is approximately 270 kilometres south of Tunis and can now be reached by autoroute from Tunis. The War Cemetery is located approximately 2 kilometres south of the town centre on the road to Gabes.
    • Historical Information: In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. In the south, the Axis forces defeated in Egypt at El Alamein withdrew into Tunisia along the coast through Libya, pursued by the Allied Eighth Army. Most of those buried in Sfax War Cemetery died in attacks on successive Axis positions at Medenine, the Marith Line and Wadi Akarit, in March and April 1943. The cemetery contains 1,253 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 52 of them unidentified. The single First World War grave in Sfax War Cemetery was brought in from Bizerta Sidi Saleru Moslem Cemetery in March 1983. There is also 1 Greek soldier of the 1939-45 war buried here.

    THIBAR SEMINARY WAR CEMETERY

    • Visiting Information: The cemetery gates are not locked, so it is possible to visit the cemetery at all times, including Saturdays and Sundays. However, the register and visitors' book will not be available outside working hours, as they are kept locked in the gardeners tool shed. The gardeners hours of work are: (Summer Hours) July: Monday - Thursday 06:30 - 14:30 Friday 06:30 - 13:30 August: Monday - Thursday 07:00 - 15:00 Friday 07:00 - 14:00 (Winter Hours) September - June: Monday - Thursday 07:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 17:00 Friday 07:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 16:00 Month of Ramadan: Monday - Friday 07:00 - 14:00
    • Location Information: The Cemetery is approximately 800 metres north of the village of Thibar, which is some 30 kilometres south west of Beja on the road to Teboursouk. The cemetery adjoins the grounds of the Agricultural College. GPS Co-ordinates: Latitude: 36.527772, Longitude: 9.104833
    • Historical Information: In May 1943, the war in North Africa came to an end in Tunisia with the defeat of the Axis powers by a combined Allied force. On 8 November 1942, Commonwealth and American troops made a series of landings in Algeria and Morocco. The Germans responded immediately by sending a force from Sicily to northern Tunisia, which checked the Allied advance east in early December. Thibar was just behind the limit of the advance that winter. Thibar Seminary War Cemetery contains 99 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.

    This early photograph of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Sfax War Cemetery in Tunisia was taken in 1949.
    In it you can see temporary grave markers from casualties of the Second World War – including The Hon. Hugh Trenchard the son of Marshal of the Royal Air Force Hugh Montague Trenchard.
