Bernie, have you got a copy of your Dad's service records already? Only checking, as you do seem to have a good bit of info already about his service.

Yes, I got it last year thanks.
It seems that after being wounded and following a long convalescence, his part in the fighting was over, my Uncle already then in the RMP 'claimed' him so that they could serve in the same unit (I think that's the right term)

By 'claiming' I mean where siblings have almost a right to serve in the same unit

Bernie was your father a PTI with the Bn during June/Nov 1938, if so there is a very good chance that he trained my father who was in training during this time passing out in Nov 1938.

    Cheers
    Paul

Paul, I've looked through my copy of his service record and found that he started in the 2nd Bn (with his brother) and then transferred to the Training Bn as L/Cpl 6.9.39 so he would have been their after your father.

Hi Paul Many thanks for the reminder, duly edited in. Could you please add a date of enlistment?

I know he enlisted when he was too young to do so (he told us he lied about his age), so if the right age would be 16, I guess he must have been 15. Anyway on the back of this picture it says that he was 15 at the time it was taken, and it does show him in uniform.
My brother still has some other stuff belonging to my dad. I'll ask him to go through this to find an enlistment document.

Found Dad's Army Book 64. Herbert Henry Harding enlisted at Manchester on 28-12-1938, which makes him 14 yrs old when he enlisted, as he was born on 24-5-1924.

Do you have any idea when he enlisted, and would you be able or willing to share any more about his experiences in the Grenadiers, or perhaps even add a photo?

    regards
    Diane

    Diane,
Thank you for this. I am not sure the exact date, but will now be contacting the Grenadier Guards to get the information, didn't know it was available until I read this thread. I think it might have been 1944, I know he served in Palestine and Malaya and had cups for boxing and cross country, he served until 1952 when he married my Mam and then left. He was very proud of the Guards, no more so then we all went to the Trooping the Colour and very fortunately attended Garden Parties.
I have several photographs and will send one or more if you wish

Tony would love if you could share photos with us.
If you have difficulties uploading to the forum - getting used to our ways - I can always send you my email address via a PM and I will edit them into you post for you.

In The National Archives there are Quarterly Historical Reports (postwar equivalent of War Diaries) for Palestine and Malaya. Further research depends on when and with which Bn - which you will be able to find from his service records.

To give you an idea this link is for 1IG in Palestine; a few mentions of Grenadier. Quality of information recorded can vary between battalions as well as Regiments; depends entirely on whoever wrote them up.
