Pay offices will only act on information posted on Part 2/3 orders - the Substansive publication date of RSM Kay's promotion is listed as an occurrence, he will have been paid as WO1 from that occurrence. It may all seem rather mundane but part 2 orders went to all departments, the regimental tailor shop would see a notification of promotion his clothing would have the knew insignia sewn on. Married quarter entitlement and a host of other changes may occur. RSM is at the top of the celestial ladder he has arrived!

Thanks again Wills (and not forgetting Diane) The white 'feathers I described could well be a leather knot. Just assumed it was plumage of some type! Probably behind the knot in the sash in the published picture, but visible on the latter.

I suppose my comment about the RSM reaching the top of the celestial ladder is Per Ardua Ad Astra!

Late father a regular airman 1935/49 Fitter/Armourer (Guns and Bombs)-as discharge book. When I finished my aircraft engineers apprenticeship and joined the Guards, he shook his head and said all that and you go Pongo on me!

Looking again at the photographs of RSM Kay. I mentioned the warrant officers sword and the picture above shows him as a Drill Sergeant WO2 wearing a sword. What I forgot to mention was that officers and WO1 wear the sword with the hand guard facing forward - ready to draw. Drill Sergeants and other WO 2 appointments where a sword is worn, (not CSMs) wear the sword reversed hand guard facing rear- making it impossible to draw - they never do draw swords anyway!

    Hello

I found this site looking for information about 6 Battalion Grenadier Guards and their exploits in March 1943. (It's a goldmine !)

My father was 4975581 Robert HUDSON CSM, in January 1938 he transferred in from the Sherwood Forresters, was a PT instructor in the Training Battalion until he volunteered to join the 6th Battalion. He was wounded 24 March 1943 (mentioned in Bn War Diary) and evacuated to No3 Casualty Clearing Station M.E.F. In March 1944 he transferred to the Corps of Military Police S.I.B. in Egypt until 1946.

    Hi Bernie,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting the info about your father. I've added this to post no. 23
    http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/392129-post23.html

The war diary entry you referred to:
    24 March 1943
    Intermittent shelling of Battalion position.
Sergeant COX was killed by a shell which hit a tree near an Anti-Tank gun position. Sergeant HENDRON was wounded by this shell.

Here is a further small reference for you of this incident, written by the M.O. who would have treated your Dad before he was evacuated. Did you father ever tell you anything about how he was wounded, or about the battle of the Horseshoe a few days before? Do you have a photo of him at all that you'd care to share?

The following day a round of shelling brought in two more casualties, Sergeant COX, dead (alleged to be 47 with a son in the Air Force), and Sergeant HUDSON with a bad abdominal wound. Apparently some gunners were moving on the skyline and these shells were directed at them. Unfortunately one struck the top of a palm tree and exploded, wounding these two. Sergeant COX had a few wounds on him, but I think it must have been instantaneous blast that killed him. Oddly enough, we heard nor more shelling after that, and I think I am right in saying that this was the last bout of shelling from this part of the MARETH Line. Of course, we did not know this at the time.

    Hello Diane
Thank you for adding him, and for the MO info.

Only once did he mention his time in the desert, "after his 'lot' had been blown up this officer drove up and said 'who's left in charge' 'I am' 'OK, I'm promoting you. Take charge.' Then he drove off and straight away hit a mine. That was the end of that."

I've up loaded some pictures from his time in the Grenadiers, others I have are from the RMP and general desert army pics which I can post if you wish ...

My Uncle (Dad's twin brother) Bernard HUDSON also entered the Grenadiers at the same time and now lives in Germany.

His number is 4975580, he too joined from the Sherwood Forresters and they joined the Guards on the same day, he was in the 2nd Bn at Wellington Barracks, then in the 4th Armoured Battalion before transferring to the RMP

Superb photos thanks for sharing these.
Do you happen to have any names for others in the squad photos?

I'll add your Uncle's name to the roll as well, if that's OK? The 4th Tank might be my next project - after I get a few more things completed. I've yet to finish the war diary for the 6GG for example.

Do you know which Company or Platoon you Dad was in?

If you want you can post more up here on this thread - but there's another option of starting a thread of your own for everything you have and can remember about your father's service. (we could link back to it here anyway). Up to you anyway, the 2 best places for New Threads would be
    http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/veteran-accounts/
or here in the Bde of Guards.
    Would love to read more.

    Cheers
    Diane

OK to add my Uncle too.
Sadly I know nothing of my Dad's unit, nor are there names with any of the group photos.
I'll have a look at the options for adding more info & the other pictures

    Superb help, and much appreciated.
I will have to sort these out later into their various groupings, but for now at least they've been referenced in your post on the thread.
    Thanks for the hard work
