Martin This is my very first attempt at responding to a forum. I am a new boy only joined today. My father was the Hallamshire Battalions Adjutant (1943/44) until he got a bullet in the spine in Normandy. He died in 1953. I have studied 49 (Polar Bear) Division during the Normandy campaign in some detail. The Hallams War Diary for June states – 13 JUN The Bn received orders to move to the woods to the WEST of LOUCELLES 8673 and take over from 6 GREEN HOWARDS who were very weary. The take over was completed by 1800.... The Green Howards had earlier battled towards St Piere and Tilly but had been forced to retire to the spot where the Hallams relieved them. The Hallams finished the war at Utrecht after having helped liberate Arnhem. I am not sure if or when that went to Germany but any move would have been after the cease fire. See ‘POLAR BEARS FROM SHEFFIELD’ by Don Scott. A 418 page book detailing all thing relating to the Hallamshire Battalion of the York & Lancs. I hope this is of some help.
