I know about this museum because I own a revolver that once belonged to the regiment and contacted the curator for information.

Wake Island, where the Japanese received their first unpleasant surprise of the war during their first attempt at conquest, Dec. 11th, 1941.
The second assault succeeded, and Wake fell Dec. 22nd (23rd at Wake).

The Japanese-occupied island was bombed several times by American aircraft; one of these raids was the first mission for future United States President George H.W. Bush.

After one of the raids, the Japanese commander ordered the execution of all Marine and civilian prisoners.

On September 4, 1945, the remaining Japanese garrison surrendered to a detachment of the United States Marine Corps.

    Tarawa

Island campaigns of the Central Pacific Theater.

The first step in these bloody campaigns took place in the Gilbert Islands, November, 1943, with the amphibious assaults on Betio Island in Tarawa Atoll
and Butaritari Island in Makin Atoll.

Many costly mistakes were made in these landings, but it was through these mistakes that commanders learned valuable lessons for the next step - the Marshalls.

First image is GE Betio. Looks like suburban sprawl in the South Pacific.

Second is an air view of the island's tail after naval bombardment.

Then a situation map of Tarawa Atoll.

GE provides no resolution of Makin Atoll, so only a map showing landing points on Butaritari.

    1. Kwajalein Island at the bottom of Kwajalein Atoll.

    2. Roi and Namur islands in Kwajalein Atoll

    3. Eniwetok Island in Eniwetok Atoll.

    4. Eniwetok and Parry islands. (Labelled Medlen on the image).

I haven't searched for Taroa on Maloelap Atoll yet.

I'll post some photos of the battles on the War On Land forum later this week. Tomorrow morning I'm off for Cape Cod and a few days of sand dunes and salt air.

Place these coordinates in Google Earth......66.27277201 179.14274288 They are of an area of Russia and the image has been blacked out. I wonder what is being censored and can anyone come up with any other "blacked out" areas?
