Could someone in Glasgow visit Tanna Drive, Mosspark, and take a photo? A row of houses there form a memorial to the Royal Artillery, and there is a plaque on No. 34 recording this. One of the houses used to be called Sheil House, in memory of Brigadier Jerry Sheil, C.B.E., D.S.O and Bar, C.R.A. 51st Division. The attached photo shows the plaque which used to be on the house, and I would like a photo of the house and the plaque if it is still there. I am writing a book of military biographies for (probably) private publication, and Jerry Sheil is the subject of one of them. He survived Dunkirk, and then fought from Alamein to Germany via Sicily and Normandy, and was killed by a mine on 29th April, 1945. Belville
Hi Belville, I've taken a virtual peek (c/o Google Street View) but there's no sign of the plaque you picture - though the flanking hedge may relate to that sprig of (what looks like) yew in your lowest photo. What a pity there are no better clues to its actual location though I rather doubt it was low enough down to be hiding behind a windowsill-height hedge! For anyone who wants to see what I mean, wary of breaching copyright by openly pasting them here, I've zipped up 2 screenshots (GSV photo & GCC map) of # 34 and uploaded the twin-archive to 4shared from where you may freely download it after a 20s wait. B) Just tell 'em Red sent you (no, only joking - the URL linked above is your secure key)
I've taken a virtual peek (c/o Google Street View) but there's no sign of the plaque you picture Yes, I looked it up on Google Street View, too. That's how I know that there is what looks like a plaque with the R.A. badge on No. 34. That may not be the house itself. I would still be grateful if someone would have a look. The plaque naming the house might be quite small. Belville
Sorry for retreading your steps but you left no footprints (didn't mention you'd already tried that). The attached photo shows the plaque which used to be on the house, and I would like a photo of the house and the plaque if it is still there. Again I'm sorry if I misread your specification (above) but your photo doesn't show the round (pressed terracotta?) plaque I now deduce you to mean - as shown fuzzily on the 34-32 party wall line of my unwanted screenshot. Re that, there's another (mounted symetrically along the linked row) on the 18-16 party wall line - giving a choice of two. And if nobody local steps into the breach, may I then suggest you also try ringing Mosspark Bowling Club on 0141-427 1800 ? PS: I'm a bit surprised the UK National Inventory of War Memorials don't seem to have any record of this - perhaps indicating a change of status occasioning the removal of Brigadier Sheil's envraved rectangular (slate?) plaque (or merely an omission needing to be put right) ...
Michael If you don't get an offer from a member who is in or going to Glasgow, and you haven't already tried, this other forum might come up with the goods. The Scottish War Memorials Project :: Index Best of luck D

Both very helpful. John McCready, of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society, took photos of the houses and the existing plaque for me. He couldn't find the one on Sheil House. I have written to the Haig Homes to see if they know what happened. By the way, as mentioned above, these houses do not seem to have been recorded for the U. K. National Inventory of War Memorials. Over to you! Belville

Hi, I have had a look and can see no plaque, only the one you have a picture of.The buildings are well maintained and have been refaced recently. If I can be of more help let me know. len
I have found that Haig Homes (Housing for the ex-Service Community) owned them up to last year, when they were transferred to the Haig Housing Trust, but Haig Homes staff still provide the care. One of the managers of Haig Homes Trust is going to investigate what happened to the plaque, and come back to me. I'll post what information I get. Belville
Belville. My immediate neighbours eldest brother was Brigadier Jerry Sheil driver who survived the mine impact. He was W/Cpl Derek Bright. Born Bedford in 1920 and died in Canada in 1991. Is there an address where he can contact the sheil Family?.
