We all remember the infamous Japanese "false flag" operation that lured the U.S. into war against Germany. Even the well-known Fukushima works Fw-190 are correctly depicted with the fake crosses - respect! I could imagine that buyers of such books would immediately identify pictures of Japanese subs like this as FAKE:
A National intelligence agency. Doubtless mistakenly leaking that the USAF uses Saab Gripens. Or something.
For true cringe aficionados, I recommend seeking out the footage of the Canuck house speaker welcoming this 98 year old 'Veteran who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today.' Applause, whoops, etc.
I saw a picture book of WWII warships once that had a carrier loaded with airplanes and the caption "USS SARATOGA just before the battle of Midway." The planes were all biplanes, mostly painted white. NB, I seem to recall that it was a Brassey publication, but not one of the annuals.
Some brave Poles fought the Russians in 1939. Up until mid-1941, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were two cheeks on the same arse. At what point if your country is being fought over, do you think "this is the lesser of two evils" ? I don't know the answer to that. One bunch of evil bastards managed to end up on the winning side and have been playing that card ever since. Germany sorted itself out.
A fair point about Poland early on, but no modern relativism whatsoever compensates for the fact the Canadian Parliament just gave a standing ovation to a member of the Waffen SS. The most glaring of mistakes. I just can't fathom how not one person in the footage, or in whatever lead up to it, appears to have gone 'Hang on a minute?!'. Utterly moronic, and playing straight into the hands of Zelensky's critics & enemies.. The Galicians were a volunteer division for most of their existence. The SS was declared a Criminal Organisation at Nuremberg. The renaming to '1st UNA' was a cynical very-end-of-war move. (And one that pretty much worked for the survival/emigration of many of their troops.) That's it. The Canuck Speaker has issued this statement. It might as well have just said 'I'm an idiot who did not take one solitary second to think' after his chirpy little commentary to their house, while basking in their attached stupidity and laughter. Edit: Glaring.. .
Canadian Parliament Speaker Anthony Rota's description of himself on linkedin (my highlights): "A seasoned senior level executive with broad based experience, and proven ability to successfully implement complex initiatives in various government and private sector settings. (...) Demonstrated success in building exceptional relationships with colleagues, external partners and stakeholders, as well as the media. Recognized by peers, senior executives, and internal and external partners as a strategic thinker who delivers superior, creative solutions. (...) - Understands the subtleties of doing business in diverse cultural settings." etc. etc. Good for him to be on linkedin, he should start looking for another job. No doubt the Kremlin will find something for him in one of its crypto-media.
Cynically, it was the classification of the Waffen-SS as a criminal organisation that made it easy to establish the myth of the "clean Wehrmacht" after the war.
Large part of me agrees, mate. Though for another thread. 'Intricate & complex historiography' rather than 'Glaring', maybe. (Been meaning to dig into our 'SS stuff' for a while. There'll be one that's just sitting there and on the right theme.)
For a change, something quite topical: "Russian media reports that the Russian Army has managed to shoot down a Storm Shadow missile, killing the British crew." Here is an archival image of that manned Storm Shadow, clearly of british origin: Actually taken in 1945 at the secret "Neu Tramm" storage facility, about 7 km from where I live.
