    Hi,

Hoping someone on here may be able to help me. I am currently trying to do some research on my Grandad in WW2. After waiting a year, we have finally received a copy of his service records.

We now know he was in the 8th Survey Regiment of the RA. I would like know if I can get hold of their regimental diary if at all possible, but how on earth do I go about finding it?

I have been on the National Archives website, and I cannot figure out where I need to be, or where I might be able to locate the records to find out where my Grandad was likely to have gone.

Apologies if this is a repetative post, I did a quick search, and couldnt seem to find any information out.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi wench,

Gus has identified the National Archives diary references for you.

But just thought I'd mention my search engine for war diaries here: Arcre - War Diary Search Engine . It is intended to make it a little easier to find the references to them.

Just for a change, I need your help

I would be exceedingly grateful for any info relating to the following problem.

I have just noticed that the War Diary of the 4th Queens Own Hussars appears to have vanished from the internet.

In the past, I have had various links that led me to the diary, including the ww2 documents link on this forum, but I now get variations of the following messages whenever I attempt to actually open the relevant pages.

    1. Sorry, this page is no longer available
    2. We are sorry, but the BT Web Hosting service that supports these pages is no longer supported.
    3. Not Found The requested URL /WarDiaries/4th_hussars/4thH1944.htm was not found on this server.

On the positive side, I had taken the precaution of previously copying the section of the diary that covered the period March '45 to December'46 simply because that was period that covered my own service with the Rgt.

On the negative side, any serious 4th QOH researcher would lose out immensely if the whole diary is no longer viewable online. Your help therefore, please, but note that it is not sufficient to reach the relevant site, you have to be able to open it.

    Many thanks

    Ron

And so you did Andy...... :)

Laboriously, page by page (including many pages I had not seen before) and for that I was and remain exceedingly grateful..

    But ..............

What I was looking for (and still am) was the original Diaries, set out for any one on the forum, or indeed any researcher whatsoever, to use for simple chronological research.

    Best regards, as always

    Ron

And the nice thing about the digital versions, although not complete, is that they are searchable, which can save a whole lot of time.

    Well done !

    That works a treat !

Whilst writing, I have just received an e-mail from the Desert Rats website giving me this link: War Diaries For 4th (Queen's Own) Hussars
which appears to be the original link that has now been fixed.

A final thanks to all who have helped to bring this to resolution :)
