Can anyone tell me what German divisions assaulted the Escaut between Warcoing and Pecq in May 1940? I'm looking to track down some unit histories, and while I have a British map it does not shown a German ORBAT opposite.

    Hi Paul,

Guards VC has a map showing the following units.

    31st Infanterie-Division

    IR 17 Divisional Reserve

    II, III/IR 12 and II, III/IR 82.

There's some excerts from their War Diaries too if your interested ?

    Regards
    Andy

Hi Andy - thanks that's useful. Does it say what Division those IR were a part of? Were they opposite Pecq?

    Update.

The above units tend to be facing Pecq and slightly south opposing the Guards Brigade. The next German Div to the North was the 14th Infanterie-Division.

Peter Taghon's 'Mei 1940' includes a reference to the 31st ID of General Kaempfe attempting to cross the Schelde in the sector defended by 2 Coldstream and 3 Grenadiers. There is a photo dated 23rd may showing soldiers of Pz.Jäg.Abt 31 loading a 3.7mm PAK onto a raft.

Paul, I'll email you a German 'Divisional Diary' (translated) that gives a day-by-day breakdown of the locations and actions of the German divisions (and smaller when anything specific happens) throughout May and June 1940 if you think it may be useful.
